Road - Test Yamaha FJR 1300 A: better and better! - Heavy but very opulent

Faced with increasingly fierce competition, Yamaha had to develop its best-seller GT, the FJR 1300. Invited to the presentation of this novelty in Spain, Site was able to take stock of the 2013 FJR 1300 A. First try.

Heavy but very opulent

About fifteen FJR 1300 "A" are patiently waiting for the moment of departure … The "AS" model is unfortunately not present, its marketing not being planned before the month of April 2013. Too bad, because we were impatient to test the improvements made to the robotic box and the new electrically adjustable suspensions…

But for lack of thrushes, let’s be satisfied with blackbirds! Plump blackbirds in this case, because the FJR 1300 still accuses 289 kg all full facts on the scale. However, it is intended to be accessible to the greatest number, with a saddle height adjustable in two positions (805 and 825 mm) and excellent control ergonomics..

The practical aspects are numerous with a small watertight and secure storage compartment from the left-hand switch (12V socket), brake and clutch levers adjustable in spacing, an aviation-type tank cap (25 liters), two crutches , a top-case plate with side and dorsal grab handles, retractable passenger footrests and side cases as standard.

Each of these waterproof and lockable cases has a capacity of 30 liters and can accommodate a full face helmet or 10 kg of personal effects. Note that the manufacturer does not recommend using them at the same time as the optional 50-liter top-case, at the risk of disturbing the stability of the machine in dynamics.

Once kicked out of its power plant with a good boost, the FJR 1300 vintage 2013 immediately reminds you of the characteristics of its predecessors, including the impression of having an anvil with wheels between the legs. It is enough to make a few maneuvers of movement with the engine stopped to get a good idea of the consequent weight of this motorcycle and the relative height of its center of gravity..

Back in the saddle, the new dashboard divided into three parts gives an idea of the level of sophistication of the Yamaha GT: analog tachometer on the left, prominent digital tachometer in the center with segmented fuel level gauge, watch and driving mode indicator (plus numerous warning lights). A multifunction digital dial is located on the right (odometer, fuel consumption indicators, temperatures, travel time and three adjustment modes: windshield, heated grip and suspensions on the AS model).

Each commodo is covered with buttons: circuit breaker, starter, change of driving mode and warnings on the right, cruise control, menu selector, indicators, horn, headlights and warning light on the left … A small phase of learning is necessary so as not to get tangled up permanently, but you get used to it relatively quickly.
