The 60:40 joint venture Sauber-Petronas Engineering presented their version of a new GP1 engine with three cylinders in line and 989 cm3 in Suzuka. The four-valve engine has two overhead, gear-driven camshafts, an integrated electronic injection and ignition system and a balancer shaft. In the first prototype variant, the engine was equipped with a pneumatic valve control based on the Formula 1 model. “But top performance and top revs are not the top priority for motorcycles. We think that we can do without it and achieve our key data of over 200 hp at 15500 rpm with regular valve springs.
