Market reports - A good 2008 for motorcycles in France - A good 2008 for motorcycles

The poor results recorded since October have weighed heavily on those – much better – at the beginning and the middle of the year … Nevertheless, 2008 will remain a very good vintage for motorcycles in France. Figures, charts and analyzes.

A happy new year 2008 for the motorcycle

Over the whole of 2008, we observe a stability in sales compared to those of the "record" year of 2007 (read).

Indeed, "that year", there were 238,966 registrations of motorcycles in France. However in 2008, this number rose to 237 844 immats … That is to say an almost negligible decline of 0.5%, with the same number of working days (253 in 2008 as in 2007) and even one day of concession opening "less (256 against 255).

But by dwelling on the evolution of the monthly progressions, we realize that the 2008 vintage is unfortunately not as tasty as it seems: the sparkling nose of January-February and the drinkable summer length have come together. completed on a terribly bitter final … Both in the big cubes and in the 125 !

The year 2008 also ended with a disappointing drop of -34.9%: while in December 2007, 7,826 motorized two-wheelers of "more than 50 cc" had found a taker, only 4,508 escaped concessions last month !

It was off to a good start

We can invoke the heavens, which have not been on the side of bikers and scooters, with temperatures "lower than seasonal", the charming weather misses kept repeating, and very – even too much! – heavy precipitation in the south.

But all the same: 26.6% decrease in the "over 125" compared to December 2007 and -42.4% in the 125 cc … Only the New Years of Jonway, Harley-Davidson and Ducati have not tarnished by the latest 2008 results.

As the data from the second half of 2008 prove, the famous crisis did eventually catch up with motorized two-wheelers, however fast they may be (read) !

However, thanks to their excellent start to the season (70,085 immats during the first six months), the big cubes again managed to stay ahead of the 125 in terms of volumes: 119,851 registrations against 117,844 on the whole of the year.

At the same time, we note that the family of scooters still grabs market share from the road clan but does not yet exceed it: 43.3% of motorcycles sold in 2008 were scooters, against 43.7% of road vehicles..

For their part, all-terrain vehicles fall below 10 points of MPR: 9.4% in 2008, against 10.7% the previous year and 12% in 2006. After a jump in 2007 (4.1%), the “Customs Choppers” PDM slipped to 3.6%, ie less than in 2006 (3.8%). In the big cubes, however, this segment is on the rise … Harley can have a smile !

Crisis and weather…

And indeed, the American signs one of the best progresses of the year with 21% more sales than in 2007. Just behind him – in 9th place, therefore – Triumph made even better impression with 26, 4%. But in terms of volumes, the two English speakers remain far from the Japanese manufacturers.

Yamaha remains the number one motorcycle manufacturer in France with 46,699 vehicles registered in 2008, an increase of 5.3% compared to 2007. The brand with three tuning forks has seen its market share grow by more than one point: from 18 , 56 in 2007 it rose to 19.65% !

Close to 14%, Honda (13.93%) takes second place from Suzuki (13.34%) in this annual ranking, all engine sizes combined – be careful, except 50 cc! The two Japanese show opposite increases with + 3.2% and -3.6% respectively.

As for the fourth Japanese manufacturer, it is finally doing quite well: despite the drop in sales of 5%, Kawasaki recovers "its" 4th place in 2007. Because at the same time, Piaggio saw its immates melt by 22, 9%! The Italian group will partially console itself with the rise of Gilera and the success of its MP3 LT accessible to B licenses (read our).

In the end, the ninjas and the Italians are separated by only 730 units and their respective market shares stand at 7.52 and 7.22%.

With 3.47 and 3.37% of PDM, Peugeot and BMW both crossed the 8,000 unit mark with 8,247 and 8,020 registrations respectively. The 6th and 7th manufacturers end their year with total sales increases of 6.2% and 5.6%.

We note that Ducati benefited from an increase in comparable sales (+ 7.2%) but its volume was lower: 3,240 immats for 2008. The Bologna brand took the opportunity to overtake Aprilia, which continued to tumble: -25.1%, or 3,091 registrations…

As for the Austrian KTM, it falls below 5,000 registrations: 4,957 to be exact, a decrease in sales of -11.2%.

As with the Europeans, on the Asian side, the fortunes are diverse: we note the breakthrough of Jonway (+ 157.6%) with its 3,867 immates, the consolidations of Sym and Sky Team (+ 10.1% and 12%), the rebound of Kymco (+ 24.9% and 4,206 immats) and the slide of Daelim (-7.8% and 3,575 immats).
