Yamaha Xmax 125 test: the return of the king of scooters 125 ?
Destroyed by the Forza 125 in 2015 after 10 years of unchallenged reign, the Xmax 125 wants to recover its crown in 2018. To do this, the Yamaha scooter "made in MBK" receives a good number of developments that Site has been able to test: direction Versailles… and its castle of course !
Xmax 125 test page 2 – Forza the MBK factory !
By presenting their new Xmax 125 to us, Yamaha officials insist in particular on the "premium" finish of the double-textured saddle, independent backrest – but not adjustable -, colored double stitching and aluminum "style" emblems: so many tricks that were previously reserved for special series, but which appear on the "standard" Xmax 2018.
Under the saddle, the capacity of the trunk does not move (two full-face helmets always) but its slightly different cut should facilitate the reception of rectangular bags. A magnifying glass will allow you to see more clearly at the bottom of a dark parking lot or at night…
In terms of exterior lines, the new Yamaha scooter takes those of the previous model: the "max" look is – a little too much? – preserved and thus remains very distinct from that of the new King Forza. In fact, the Xmax 125 adopts above all the fairings of the very last 400 and 300, with protruding parts and cleanly arranged.
The platform strategy is pushed here to its climax: "overall, the 125 differs from the 400 only by its engine, its exhaust and its rear axle … and its mirrors!", Detail for us the Blues (and the second disc before, then?!). Compared to the 300 (single front disc for once) released a few months earlier, "only the saddle and the handlebar cover have been redesigned".
Arrived on the 125cc in 2014, the more sporty rims are unchanged but that of 15 inches at the front sees the disc of 267 mm (and not 276 as suggested it the first press release) tack, while that of 14-inch rear accommodates a new 245mm (+5mm) disc.
Decked out with long painted mudguard sides, the new fork of the Yamaha scooter (s) must strengthen its (their) front axle: "it is a real motorcycle fork with a double tee, and whose wheel fixing is placed at the end of the tubes, without offset, in order to increase the rigidity ", assure the persons in charge.
In terms of lighting also the Xmax 2018 wants to be more efficient: after the rear light in 2014 and the position lights of the 2016 "Euro4" model, the LEDs are used throughout the machine in 2018 … turn signals that may switch to diodes in 2020 ?
MNC notes in passing that the elegant curved shape of the front position lights is taken up at the rear … with less success because it aesthetically and unnecessarily widens the scooter that Yamaha nevertheless wanted a little thinner than its predecessor (775 mm Vs 790).
The dashboard also changes in 2018: paradoxically, it marks a return to analog after the all-digital in 2014. "Customers love the two large needle counters", guarantee us the Yamaha managers who took the opportunity to modify the typography of the dials and the cap.
The handlebars are ergonomic and practical, especially for scrolling through the wealth of information relayed by the inverted display LCD window, that is to say white on a black background which makes it "more modern", according to Yamaha.
In addition to the time, the pilot has the choice between outside temperature, battery voltage, traction control (On / Off), average consumption, instantaneous consumption or average speed in the upper part, odometer, trip, driving time, maintenance oil or belt in the lower part.
Among the many developments in 2018, one of the most is undoubtedly the adoption of the "smartkey" system which allows, key in pocket, to use your scooter. Thanks to him, it’s impossible to get stuck by accidentally closing his trunk in which is his briefcase, sports bag or overcoat with, inside, his bunch of keys !
Conversely, the user is no longer at risk of leaving his scooter with the ignition on: in this case, he is called to order by an audible reminder. If the two storage compartments do not have a lock, the one on the left is indeed linked to the "smart key" and locks as if by magic. You can charge your smartphone there: less "smart" on the other hand, the 12V socket requires a USB adapter for this….
At the end of this owner’s tour, MNC therefore confirms that the Xmax has everything the great 300 and 400! It even offers a little more in terms of colors since in addition to the Silver "Blazing", Gray "Sonic" and Blue "Phantom", Yamaha has reserved a Red "Radical", a malicious nod to its main target….
Also at this stage, MNC regrets that the platform policy led by the Japanese manufacturer has not resulted in a maintenance – even a decrease! – the price, now set at 4,999 euros … This means that with an extension of only 900 euros, A2 license holders can afford the 300 cc !
A1 or B licenses that are not sensitive to the "Made in France" label will necessarily turn to the competition in order to compare prices. For 50 euros less in Honda dealerships mainly, "scootomobilists" can set off again on the handlebars of the king of GT-sporty scooters "Fatto in Italia".
On the other hand, you have to pay almost twice as much for an Italian or French brand three-wheeler, three times as much for a German electric maxiscooter … The prices of 125 scooters accessible to motorists – which also refer to the prices of a micro Smart city car? – would ultimately not be so high? For them to judge.
The 2018 Xmax 125 is not expected before the end of November in French Yamaha dealerships. But boosted, the Motorcycle Journal of the net was able to make a 76 km loop on its handlebars. On the program: walk in the capital then getaway in the Bois de Boulogne, before a quick passage in front of the residence of "Louis Croibatonve"…
