Green seven

In the Superbike World Championship, some of the green racer’s former glory has peeled off. A used Kawasaki ZX-7R is a solid offer for ambitious drivers.

Peter Limmert

11/29/2001

It almost seems as if I had Kawasaki gave up the race for the Superbike World Championship crown, which she won in 1993 with Scott Russell. With a conventional carburetor system, the ZX-7R is increasingly becoming a loser compared to the competition with electronic fuel injection. And not just on the racetrack. Is she limping in terms of weight? after all, 237 kilograms full of fuel ?? not only clearly behind their brand siblings ZX-6R and ZX-9R. In the six years it was built, around 5500 750 models were sold, but sales of the new Kawasaki ZX-7R have now stagnated.
Those interested in the green sportswoman are waiting in vain for modifications or even a completely new model in the formerly hotly contested Superbike class in 2002. Why Kawasaki is so reluctant in the Superbike class can only be speculated about. And the competition in racing is only one side, so to speak, the PR business for the sale of the bourgeois street version. Solidity and reliability for the sporty, ambitious driver is the other. And here the ZX-7R has qualities that its big competitor on the road, the GSX-R 750 from Suzuki, cannot offer.
Despite the somewhat outdated construction, the Kawasaki can still convince with immense driving stability and steering precision. Once the curve is properly targeted, the ZX-7R drives a round, clean line similar to a Ducati 996, nothing to disturb it. Nothing wobbles, nothing wobbles. However, when it comes to handling, it cannot deny the high weight and the track-stable chassis design. In addition to the spring elements, the brakes are also characterized by their high quality, they do their job well and inconspicuously. In addition, the athlete impresses with its solid workmanship.
Not quite as convincing, at least from the perspective of short drivers, is the seating position. The relatively large distance between the seat and the deeply clamped handlebar halves stretch the upper body taut over the tank. In connection with the half-height position of the footrests, the pilot crouches rather uncomfortably when stopping and going in city traffic. Only outside does the airflow relieve the upper body and strained wrists. After just a few kilometers, it is clear that the ergonomics are designed solely for sporting use, especially on the racetrack.
The four-cylinder engine shines with high mileage. Mileage between 70,000 and 80,000 kilometers has now been achieved without any problems, without the engines having to be overhauled. The construction is based on that of the engine of the ZXR 750, got a new cylinder head with bucket tappets instead of the rocker arms previously used. Rubber elements on the engine and in the voluminous frame profiles dampen annoying vibrations. The secondary air system, which, according to Kawasaki Germany, is as effective as an unregulated catalytic converter, would have to give way to an injection with a regulated catalytic converter for more rigid emissions standards in the future.
There were no modifications in the series. In the 1996 vintage there were isolated cases of a leaking coolant expansion tank in the right panel. Older models may have a leak near the bracket. Kawasaki reinforced the component from 1998 onwards. On a few ZX-7Rs, the silencer mounting clamp caused annoyance that tore due to vibrations. In newer versions, an additional weld seam ensures sufficient stability.
The athlete was delivered with 98 hp until 1998, the open version from 1999 onwards has 122 hp. If you want to dethrottle the older version, you need different throttle valves and carburetor covers. In addition to the material costs of around 940 marks, there are also the costs of 2.4 working hours. Professionals advise against the cheaper solution with only different carburetor covers from the accessories, because it can happen that the carburetor diaphragms of the old slides do not play along. In any case, with a pre-owned offer with 98 hp, there is room for negotiation with the price with reference to the “full performance” option.
Sporty drivers criticize the first tires used by Kawasaki, the Dunlop D 204, because the handiness suffers and the machine has to be forced onto the desired line with too much power. The Pirelli Dragon in the narrower 180 mm rear wheel version or the Hi-Sport pairing from Michelin in the original size 190/50 do better in these criteria.
If you want your chassis to be even tighter, or if the somewhat slack original spring elements have to be replaced on machines with higher mileage, you will find it at Wilbers Products, phone 0 59 21/60 57. More progressive fork springs cost 179 marks and an alternative shock absorber is available for 799 or 1199 marks.
Due to the high level of reliability, ZX-7R drivers do not seem to want to part with their beloved vehicle so easily. Maybe not until Kawasaki presents a new 750cc model. Second-hand offers of the suberbike are not very numerous. The parallel importer is currently offering new copies for 17,000 marks. Older used machines from the first two years of production with around 40,000 kilometers are hardly traded for less than 7,000 marks.

Market overview – Kawasaki ZX-7R

Around 4400 of the Kawasaki ZX-7R, on the market since 1996, are registered in this country. The Schwacke list noted: year of construction 2000 (7800 kilometers) 13,900 marks; 1999 (16,200 kilometers) 12300 marks; 1998 (24,600 kilometers) 11,000 marks; 1997 (33,000 kilometers) 9800 marks; 1996 (41,400 kilometers) 8,700 marks. In general, the train for 750 Superbikes seems to be crazy – the only, but outstanding alternative: the Suzuki GSX-R 750. The models between 1995 and 1999, corresponding to the year of construction, are even more explosive in the open version and, above all, lighter than the 7R. The cheapest is the Yamaha YZF 750 R, which was only produced up to 1998, which, less extreme than the two competitors, at least knows how to convince in the 98 hp version. The modern Superbike trailer today, however, looks more in the more potent V-segment with 1000 cm3.

Reader’s Experience – Kawasaki ZX-7R

My 7R with 18,000 kilometers has never had any unscheduled workshop visits. The original tires (Dunlop D 204) fit well, Pirelli Dragon are better for racetrack visits, preferably in the Corsa compound. Unfortunately, the 190 size tires are very expensive (Dunlop: 500 marks). The Internet is worthwhile here (eBay auctions). You can save a good 300 marks with the couple. The bends in particular are inaccessible during maintenance and will rot over time behind the panel. The often criticized extreme seating position, at 1.80 meters, is ideal for me even on 500-kilometer stages.Dietrich Knopf, @ onelineAfter 40,000 kilometers, I’m still thrilled. The brakes: enormous in every respect, except when it comes to wear. Clutch lever and brake lever bearings wear out early if they are not properly maintained, then a new, self-made bronze sleeve must be produced or new, expensive levers are due. A torn fluid container and defective tachometer were replaced under guarantee. Herbert Obermair, Neuhofen, Austria In four years and over 76,000 kilometers, the Kawa has proven to be reliable. Decisive for the choice: the stable running gear and the easy-turning, high-torque engine. Your biggest weakness is certainly the difficult turning behavior. This can be remedied by changing the tires, for example to the narrower 180 Pirelli Dragon rear tires. Even with Michelin Pilot Sport (190), the machine is much easier to drive thanks to its sharper contour. You get used to small weaknesses such as the constantly whistling tank ventilation or the sometimes gnarled second gear. Problems were initially caused by the rear silencer clamp, which tore twice due to vibrations. Martin Klahr, Bad Kreuznach
