Of course, street fighters also go on longer journeys. So it’s nice that, in addition to hooks on the pillion pegs, there are also luggage hooks on the rear frame.

Of course, in times like these, the red pencil has to come into its own. But considering the price, an adjustable clutch lever would not be a superfluous luxury.

More displacement, more pressure

As the successor to the very successful Z 750, the angularly styled Kawasaki Z 800 had a great legacy. Their recipe for success: more displacement, more pressure and more street fighters.

Sugomi. That was her Japanese nickname. Translated, this means “fighter nature” and makes it clear in which direction Kawasaki wanted to trim the Z-series, which was once developed as a superbike: away from the classic naked bike, towards the powerful corner robber. With the 806 cubic engine, Kawa caught up with the Yamaha FZ8, which raised the displacement bar for the mid-range in 2011. But the fact that middle class does not mean mediocrity is what makes them Kawasaki Z 800 In direct comparison with its predecessor, the Z 750 presented in 2004, it is clear: butt up, front down, the lamp mask is grim and the Kawa-typical sound is rough and grumpy – so it looks nasty and fast even when standing still. But there is a good core behind the Streetfighter attitude: a powerful but playfully tamed engine that develops its 113 hp on a powerful wave of torque. The pilot could stand it for a long time on the rather narrow seat at a height of 834 millimeters – not so the pillion passenger on his narrow and slippery seat bun. In the special performance model, this consequently gives way to a cover, the bulky series muffler to a noble carbon damper from Akrapovic.

Market situation

Only published in 2013 is the Z 800 not really old, of course. And that’s exactly what you can see in the used prices: Depending on the model year, it was new to have between 8845 and 9495 euros, and acceptable used ones are available from 6000 euros.

6990 euros
Example: EZ 03/2013, 10,400 km
Second-hand offer from the Kawasaki authorized dealer: well-maintained Z 800 from first owner with the full 113 hp, original condition, not tampered with, free from falling over, new tires, TuV until 02/2018 and with one year warranty.

from 6000 euros
Example ad: 10,000 km, EZ 06/2013, HU until 07/2017, handlebar end mirror, short rear, LED indicators, black-green, two previous owners, 6300 euros, price is negotiable (private offer from North Rhine-Westphalia)
Medium price level. The Z 800 did not come onto the market until 2013, so the used offers are correspondingly expensive and uniform. It is practically not available for less than 6,000 euros, above which the offers differ mainly in the special equipment and the HU process. The slightly reduced-power e-version changes hands a little cheaper.

from 7500 euros
Example ad: 2800 km, EZ 08/2014, new HU, from first hand, full service history, lowered, sports exhaust, mini indicators, adjustable brake and clutch levers, short license plate holder, 7600 euros, price is negotiable (private offer from Schleswig-Holstein)
High price level. About 1000 euros more and you have a wide choice. HU new, special equipment, low mileage, first-hand offers with residual guarantee or straight from the dealer. For the same money, however, the Z 800e can also be purchased as a new vehicle, another 1000 euros on top, and the unthrottled version is in the garage as a new machine.

Hauke Soltau (51) has been screwing and selling Heller since 1987 as a master mechanic and authorized dealer & Soltau Kawasakis in the deepest Dithmarschen. Dithmarschen? Far in the west of Schleswig-Holstein, right on the North Sea.

Keyword “middle class bike” …
The Z 800 clearly belongs to the middle class. It is perfect for someone for whom the Z 1000 is too heavy, but a 600 is too small. It fits in there exactly. Nevertheless, neither the equipment nor the processing was saved.

And whoever buys or sells a Z 800?
The Z 800 is especially popular with novice drivers and those returning to the sport. But their character is no different from other motorcyclists. The holding period is comparatively long, the Z 800 is usually only sold for health reasons or because a change is sought, usually in the direction of a super sports car.

In previous tests, MOTORRAD had criticized the series tires and a delayed throttle response. Is that an issue with other Z drivers as well?
The series tires are not particularly great or suitable for many motorcycles, so that is not an argument for a weakness for me. We have a customer who drives over 20,000 kilometers per pair of tires, and for them this is the top tire. Another customer has a completely different approach and finishes the rubber in 5000 kilometers – of course he needs a different tire. In any case, our demonstrators have standard tires and we are happy to drive them with them. As professionals, you may perceive a delayed throttle response, but that would be complaining at a high level. Ordinary mortals actually never get into areas where these weak points could really play a role.

What is most likely to be changed on a Z 800??
Especially at the rear, handlebars and turn signals, hands are made. In addition, Z 800 owners like to screw on a different exhaust and are happy about the even more ingenious sound compared to the series.

How is the Z 800 represented on the used market?
Used zetts are in great demand. So far there are only a few offers, these are between 6000 and 7000 euros. Although the Z 800 is relatively stable in value due to the low supply, these 2,000 to 3,000 euros savings are definitely an argument in favor of buying a used vehicle.
