From the scare of the citizens to the touring bike

Ten years ago it was the frightening of the citizens and heated tempers at 300 km / h. Today she has an impeccable reputation as a serious touring bike. What is the status of their reputation as a used car?

Jorg Lohse

If you dig into old MOTORRAD magazines, after reading volume 15/2000, you may be quick to put the purchase of a used Hayabusa on file: “Long distance test. The Suzuki GSX 1300 R Hayabusa only managed 50,000 kilometers. “No judgment could be more devastating. Japan’s supersonic rocket, scourged as a suicide weapon when it appeared in the sensational press, is self-directed in MOTORRAD’s 50,000-kilometer test. 3,643 kilometers before the end of the long-term test – a job that would theoretically have been done in twelve hours at the possible top speed of 300 km / h – breaks Timing chain tensioner spring. The result: blown valve guides, bent inlet valves, major engine damage. And not the first on the long-term test bike. The same defect first appeared at kilometer reading 24295 and required the cylinder head to be replaced.

In the meantime, the failure can confidently be recorded as a childhood disease. Suzuki reacted quickly and had the problematic tensioner replaced. The Hayabusa is ten years old, and according to KBA statistics, around 4800 pieces are on the road in Germany. Most of them problem-free, at least according to the opinion of workshops and many users in the fan forum.
The first major revision did not take place until model year 2008, until then it was left with minor modifications – although the throttling to 295 km / h was hotly debated in the scene. However, the speed bike is valued much more by touring enthusiasts who appreciate sovereign cruising with their Japanese hunting falcon: great driving performance with a lazy driving style, a harmoniously coordinated chassis and considerable ranges of over 400 kilometers in country road mode.

In the end, there is a purchase recommendation with restrictions: if the condition is correct, you can get an adult motorcycle for every day from 4500 euros, which can be a reliable partner for years to come. If you do without your partner on tours; because the pillion seat is a reason for separation.

The nose in the wind. In terms of the design, everything was aimed at optimal aerodynamics. In practice, the windshield that is set too flat is a nuisance.

An extremely uncomfortable pillion seat is hidden under the camel’s hump. The handle for this must be installed separately.

The digital influence is subdued even with the 2006 Hayabusa. The cockpit landscape is dominated by round instruments that are difficult to read.

Like on rails:
The aluminum swing arm is reinforced with an upper cable. This brings sufficient stability when driving at high speeds on the track.

In the Hayabusa I, a six-piston brake system is supposed to provide sufficient deceleration; from 2008 there will be four-piston calipers. The ABS is still missing today.

Facelift

1999  Market launch with 175 HP peak power at 9800 rpm and 300 km / h top speed. Price 21620 marks (11054 euros)

2000 The installation of harder clutch springs is intended to eliminate problems with the clutch, which can sometimes be very jerky, and the engine ventilation has been changed slightly. Price 23,490 marks (11,872 euros)

2001
As part of the voluntary self-restraint of the manufacturer, the Hayabusa is governed at 295 speed by limiting the speed in sixth gear. New instrument unit with digital-
speedometer. New fuel pump in a new location, tank capacity drops from 22 to 21 liters, rear frame made of steel (previously aluminum). Price 24,320 marks (12,573 euros)

2002
A regulated catalytic converter with a secondary air system replaces the exhaust gas cleaning from U-Kat plus secondary air system and makes the Hayabusa Euro2-fit. New currency, new price: 12810 euros

2008 Heavily revised model with a new shape and a new name: Hayabusa 1300. Engine increases displacement by 41 cm³ (now 1340 cm³) and 22 HP peak output (now 197 HP at 9500 rpm). Radially mounted four-piston fixed caliper brakes replace the six-piston calipers of the Hayabusa I. Empty weight increases from 251 to 260 kilos, engine control unit with three freely selectable performance characteristics, G-Kat meets the Euro 3 standard. Top speed remains limited to 295 km / h. Price 13590 euros

Callbacks

1999 Replacement of the timing chain tensioner due to the risk of spring breakage (chassis numbers JS1A1111200100071 to JS1A1111200101126). The recall is considered complete. Also affected by the replacement: fuel tap and filter to improve the throttle response. Usually works as part of the regular inspection.

2008 Checking the ignition lock cable routing

Market situation

Basically, so dealers in Germany report, the Hayabusa is a popular model. As a rule, copies taken in payment do not last long. The mileage is an important criterion. Models with over 40,000 kilometers are tough to sell. The prices for the hunting falcon start at around 4000 euros for the first years of construction up to 2002 and odometer readings of over 50,000 kilometers.

Most of the offers range between 5,000 and 7,000 euros with a mileage of 25,000 to 40,000 kilometers. The Hayabusa II does not yet play an important role as a used one. Reason: Many owners of the first Hayabusa only recently switched to the second.

Hunting falcon or peregrine falcon? During the appraisal, you should check carefully whether the bike on offer was used for traveling or racing. Be careful with offers with strongly jerky clutch or noticeable play in the drive train and steering head bearings. Here the fat torque yield was too often in the foreground. Another indication of frequent sins of speed: a ridden brake system, recognizable by the pulsating brake levers when driving slowly and with slight deceleration. Then the brake discs warped as a result of numerous emergency stops from high speeds. Is it difficult to shift the gears? The cause can be worn shift claws. Hands off, an expensive repair is imminent. A look under the cladding is always worthwhile: On the one hand, to check whether there are telltale signs of a fall or accident hidden under and in the shell. On the other hand, to check the engine for oil and coolant leaks. The wheel bearings and fork seals should also be checked to ensure that they are in perfect condition. Connoisseurs have optimized their Suzuki sensibly: These include touring-suitable Vario windshield from MRA, higher LSL handlebars, finely appealing Ohlins shock absorbers and also Ohlins fork springs. Sensitive people also swear by Lucas brake discs and sintered pads as well as the red, reinforced polymer shock absorbers on the chainring mounts.
