When everyone is for the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere, it was not available. When it was finally at the dealerships from May 2010, hardly anyone wanted it anymore – the birth pangs of the Super Tenere lingered on for a long time. For example in the following year, when there were still many unsold copies of the fully equipped “First Edition” at dealerships and only found buyers at competitive prices.

But why did the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere play along so badly? Just because with a full tank of 267 kilograms it turned out around 20 kilograms heavier than the GS top dog from BMW? Because you suspected that Bayern had a 15 hp more powerful water boxer in the pipeline? Or only because after the first test drives, slogans about “tired engine” made the rounds?
In the wild, the Super Tenere is often the better GS
No matter, the fact is that the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere never stood a chance against the GS in the showroom and in the registration statistics. But only there; because in the wild the Yamaha is often enough the better GS! Too much bulk? Nonsense, when the perfectly balanced machine is rolling, there is no trace of it. The XT is also amazingly handy and absolutely stable even at top speed.
Not enough punch in the upper speed range? Uninteresting, because where real life happens, the incredibly sophisticated engine of the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere is a model boy that impresses with its great responsiveness. In addition, there is a perfect shaft drive, an all-round successful, extremely comfortable workplace and top equipment. If you don’t want to believe that, just ask the Super Tenere driver. And then looks for a used bargain that may well be a demonstrator or a day approval from the dealer.

Even Yamaha dealers, who do not count the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere among their favorite models, frankly admit: When it comes to reliability, it is completely problem-free. That leaves only the supposed trivia that should be considered during the viewing appointment. For example, the locks of the original suitcase that is too small (for a full-face helmet): They tend to be annoying with pronounced hooking, and the riveting of the case locks also tends to take on a loose life of its own in advanced age. Hookiness can also make it difficult to use the ignition lock.
An allegedly too low oil level when checking the sight glass of the cold engine is usually not an alarm signal – the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere has dry sump lubrication, the oil level check has to be carried out when the engine is warm and after a few minutes of idle time. The tension of the wire spokes should be checked regularly, and the four spark plugs don’t like to let them run short.

At least not at the tariffs that are officially called up in the relevant online sales portals. In the four-digit euro range, there is at least some market movement noticeable: Everything with an 8 or a low 9 at the beginning can be sold fairly quickly. However, if more than ten mille are required for a “real” used one, that is the guarantee that you will stay with the seller for a longer period of time.
The basic problem lies in the fact that there are still plenty of demonstrators on the market with very few and also some daily registrations without any kilometers. And these grandfather clocks are disposed of for a whopping 11,000 euros. Dealer motto: Close your eyes and get away with it! If it really hurts, sometimes below your own purchase price. Bargain hunters do not have to spend more than 11,500 euros for a zero-kilometer XT, even if it can also be the model from the previous year. Of course, this spoils the business of all sellers who have no guarantee, but have worn tires and a due chain set to offer. Clear announcement: The Super Tenere used market is currently a buyer’s, not a seller’s market. The upgraded 2014 model of the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere doesn’t make the situation any easier.
