1000 kilometers with the jackdaw

In February 2007, MOTORRAD bought a Shineray XY 125 GY online for 511 euros. After a desperate top test and a 132 euro cure, we try again with the Chinese enduro.

After the top test of the S.hineray XY 125 GY, published in issue 12/2007, it looked as if the high point of her career at MOTORRAD would also be the end point. After a harmless slip, both the gear lever and the rear frame broke off, and the original Chinese tires had hardly any tread after 800 kilometers, on top of that the lamp socket of the headlight had melted.

Although this list is only the tip of the iceberg, the list of defects had been longer than that of all the other endurance test motorcycles put together. And so the Shineray XY 125 GY wandered into the farthest corner of the editorial garage, its fate seemed sealed.

Hardly anyone would have bet on it: a four-digit odometer reading despite occasional off-road use.

But as life goes: in the end it is always the three-legged, one-eyed dog that you take home from the animal shelter to nurse it up. And so a bright H4 headlamp insert from Hella lets the Shineray XY 125 GY be seen again, Messer-Griesheim donated a meter of welding wire for the rear frame, and after some searching, a set of almost matching rubbers was found at Heidenau. In total, the cure cost 132 euros without working hours. The oil was quickly changed, the valves provided with play, all screw connections checked and tightened, then the Chinese woman was cured and was allowed to participate in life again.

What hardly anyone would have thought possible after previous events: The Shineray XY 125 GY has been running for 300 kilometers without defects and problems. And that, even though she partially covered it under more severe conditions. It was used as a paddock bike and toy at two enduro events. And provided a tangible surprise: she was visibly comfortable in the mud and dust. Their compactness and good-naturedness were particularly well received by off-road novices. And even with a forced twist on the throttle, she put away a lot more than you would have expected. Even if, of course, comparisons with a serious device are forbidden for reasons of courtesy. After a dealer has been found in the meantime who is willing and able to deliver Shineray parts, the future looks bright again.
