The heat value indicates the thermal load capacity of the spark plug. The porcelain insulator foot requires a working temperature of 400 to 850 degrees. Below 400 degrees, deposits of oil, coal and soot are deposited. They prevent the formation of a clean spark. At temperatures of more than 850 degrees, glow ignitions can occur on the insulator. As a result, the electrodes are subject to severe wear.
As the heat value of a spark plug increases, the tendency to glow ignition decreases, but the risk of contamination increases. As the heat value decreases, it reacts more susceptibly to glow ignitions, but the risk of contamination is lower.
The heat value is based on the combustion chamber temperature. During operation, the electrode and insulator are heated to an average working temperature by the combustion temperature.
The material of the center electrode has a decisive influence on the thermal conductivity. In the case of silver or nickel alloys with a copper shaft, the insulator can be extended with the same heat value. The spark plug thus has a working range that is expanded towards low temperatures. Such spark plugs are suitable for strongly changing operating conditions. The reduction of combustion and ignition misfires results in advantages in terms of exhaust gas values.
Unfortunately, there is still no uniform standardization of the spark plug manufacturers for the labeling of the heat values. For example, Bosch signals an increasing heat value as the number increases. In the case of Champion and NGK, on ββthe other hand, the calorific value falls with increasing numbering.
Design and heat index: Spark plugs with a low heat index have short insulator feet.
