After the Mayoress of Paris Anne Hidalgo recently enforced parking fees for two-wheelers with combustion engines, there is a second: from the end of August a general speed limit of 30 km / h will apply on the streets of Paris. After a good 60 percent of the city center was already limited to 30, the city government is finally extending the regulation to all streets. So almost: 50 km / h is still allowed on the famous Champs-Elysees and some major avenues, and 70 things are still allowed on the ring road.

Just one of a few measures

The mayor’s latest decision is part of a long list of measures that have nothing other than to reduce individual motorized traffic in the city center as much as possible. The most violent example is the diesel ban in Paris from 2024. An interesting move is the cancellation of the direction of travel in one-way streets for bicycles or the already significantly increased number of bike paths at times of lockdown. A clever example from Madame Hidalgo: She repealed a law from 1967 that required one underground parking space for each apartment built. The result: if I don’t have a safe parking space anyway, a car won’t help. In figures: Since taking office in 2015, the proportion of households with a car in Paris has fallen to a good 30 percent. In the rest of France, the proportion is a good 85 percent.

Tempo 30 for motorcycles

Of course, the general speed limit of 30 km / h in Paris is also binding for motorcycles and scooters, which shape the traffic situation in Paris anyway. Practice will show whether this will actually result in a noticeable slowdown in two-wheeled traffic.

Tempo 30 in the city. What do you think?

A good thing when it comes to safety and noise protection.

Does not achieve anything. If the road planning is bad, it doesn’t matter how slow I drive.

Conclusion

Speed limit 30 in Paris from the end of August: Thousands of traffic jam victims cheer every day: It would be nice! The reality in Paris is: It doesn’t matter what speed limit you get stuck in traffic.

Only in terms of accident safety is it a step forward. According to an EU study, the chance of survival of a hit by a pedestrian increases from 50 to 90 percent if cars only drive 30 instead of 50 km / h. And it should be worth it.
