New Daytona 675 R review: Catch me if you can !
By inviting the press to the magnificent – but extremely demanding – Portimao circuit, Triumph has decided to put its new Daytona 675 R – and the testers – to the test! Is the new English the new lethal weapon on the track ? First try.
Brembo: Finger in the Nose braking !
The new front brake, however, calls for no criticism. The lever attack is straightforward but measurable and there is no need to tighten it strongly to make the rear wheel take off! So much so that off the track, it will be necessary to pay special attention to it and to suppress any reflex seizure: a point in common with the "standard" version, already formidable under braking. !
But since this test is to judge the capabilities of the new Daytona on the track, we can only congratulate Triumph for choosing a Brembo equipment. !
The two 308mm discs of the "standard" Daytona are bitten on the "R" by monobloc four-piston calipers connected by aviation hose to the Italian 18mm master cylinder. The whole is perfectly homogeneous and effectively guarantees the "exceptional braking"announced by Triumph.
Sharp, powerful, adjustable and durable, the Daytona 675 R’s brakes will certainly be hard to beat! The rear brake is the same as that of the Daytona 675. Useless on the track – it is Schwantz Himself who tells his trainees trackers – MNC is all the better without the butterflies of the injection remain open during deceleration phases, eliminating the need to add an anti-dribble system.
In the end, the Daytona 675 R turns out to be an excellent tracker: perfect for lovers of track days, it is an excellent base for pilots wishing to get started and even shine in competition. It is for the latter that the price increase of € 1,670 (between the standard version at € 11,320 and the R at 12,990) will be the most legitimate.
For the occasional racer who does not chase the stopwatch and the "Racing" decorations, the standard Daytona is still more than sufficient. Especially since Triumph France is currently delivering – and until May 31 – Daytona "very short" with the Quickshifter, the Arrow pot and the anodized radial levers without supplements (read) !
Faced with its designated competitors (Suzuki GSX-R 750 and Ducati 848 Evo), the Triumph Daytona 675 R at 12,990 euros marks its first points in terms of price: the Japanese costs 13,499 euros while the Italian costs 14,500 euros. euros! But only a complete MNC comparison – on the track but also on the road! – will make it possible to really separate them…
Too bad, however, that Triumph is no longer officially entered in the Supersport World Championship: the Hinckley factory will not be able to prove the superiority of its machine over the Japanese 600 cc !
"We were supposed to run in 2011, but the Italians (from BE1 Racing, NDLR) let us down at the very last moment", regret the English officials. Wishing to continue expanding their range (20 models currently, probably 23 in 2012) and that of their international network (latest openings: Moscow and Buenos Aires!), Triumph – to his chagrin – did not wish to grant the budget extension requested by the SSP team.
Fourth in the 2010 championship behind the untouchables Sofuoglu, Laverty and Lascorz, Chaz Davies and his Daytona had entered the Top 5 ten times and had climbed the third step of the podium four times. The three scarecrows in the category gone, Chaz and the Dayto ‘could hope for a superb 2011 season…
Fortunately for the Daytona 675 R, there are still the tests – enthusiastic as far as we are concerned – from the press, but also and above all word of mouth between customers. Based on internal Triumph surveys, "97% of Daytona owners would recommend buying Triumph". Given the potential and the temperament of the English Supersport, it is easy to understand why !
