In the test: Suzuki Burgman 400 Z

Very comfortable Suzuki scooter

The Suzuki Burgman 400 Z large scooter combines comfort and plenty of space for luggage with the advantages of motorcycling.

Suzuki’s endurance runner among large scooters, the Burgman 400, scores points even in the basic version for 6800 euros with a lot of comfort and a huge amount of space on and under the seat: driver and passenger sit comfortably on the soft and wide seat cushions; the illuminated storage compartment underneath offers plenty of space for weekly shopping. The trunk holds 62 liters – that’s enough for two full-face helmets plus motorcycle jackets. There are three smaller storage compartments under the cockpit, one of which is lockable and equipped with a 12-volt socket. There z. B. charge a cell phone while driving. The € 300 more expensive model Burgman 400 Z will please year-round drivers with heated grips and large hand guards painted in the vehicle color. It also has a backrest for the front passenger.

D.he modern cockpit looks like it came from a car. It provides the driver with more information than he needs to drive: in addition to the usual data, it shows the outside temperature, average consumption and the next inspection. The low fuel consumption is also exemplary, but the Burgman has a rather modest engine output: 33 HP is sufficient for everyday use, but overtaking maneuvers take a little longer. A pleasure scooter driver doesn’t get involved in traffic light duels anyway. The 650 Burgman is open to anyone who needs or wants more power. The excellent brakes deserve great praise. They grip hard and require little hand strength; The Burgman 400 Z has ABS on board as standard. For 7200 euros you get a neatly processed, very well equipped scooter that hardly has any weaknesses. Only the footrests for the passenger are very narrow and short; the feet slip off easily. It is also questionable why the double headlight uses one half for the low beam and the other half for the high beam – especially since the low beam illuminates the right edge of the road rather poorly. However, this is marginal criticism of an all-round successful scooter.

Driving behavior / final rating

Bilski

The Burgman has plenty of space under the bench, even two full-face helmets fit in the compartment.

Driving behavior

In the city
Unfortunately, the Burgman is not suitable for meandering through dense city traffic, it is too wide for that – it measures 84 centimeters on the handguards and 92 on the mirrors. No matter whether it’s weekly shopping or a briefcase, there is space in the huge, illuminated storage compartment loads of luggage.

On the highway

On the autobahn, the Burgman reaches the specified maximum speed of 140 km / h and runs even faster. At this rate, however, the single-cylinder revs unduly high. Smaller drivers in particular are largely spared the wind behind the windshield.

On the country road
33 hp are enough for country road speeds. Overtaking maneuvers, however, require a little more distance and time. Thanks to the comfortable seating position, long distances can be covered easily, consumption is pleasantly low, and the chassis strikes a good balance between comfort and feedback.

Final scoring

engine
The single-cylinder does its job economically and smoothly. 33 HP is just enough, overtaking maneuvers need to be carefully considered.

Furnishing
Clock, fuel gauge, thermometer, rev counter, hazard warning lights, storage compartments – the Burgman has more than you need and is well made.

Comfort
Soft upholstery, lots of space, good wind protection – that’s all you need for happiness. Only very tall drivers want a higher disc.

landing gear
The scooter manages a good compromise between comfort and hardness. However, he gets a little restless at high speed.

Brakes
The large double discs in the front and the single disc in the rear decelerate perfectly. The standard ABS takes the fear out of emergency braking.

Suitable for beginners
At 225 kilograms, the Burgman is quite heavy, but thanks to its low center of gravity it is good-natured and easy to handle.
