The Suzuki V-strom arrives late on the big trail market but the manufacturer took advantage of this time to observe, listen to the criticisms, and present us a machine that has long teeth. It must offer the comfort of a Varadero, the sporty side of a Navigator, the technology of a Caponord and the address of an R 1150 GS. The squaring of the circle, in a way. To propose the ideal sporty road, of course … and by discovering that the perimeter aluminum frame houses the late twin of the TL 1000 S, we begin to take a serious interest in this big trail – and high, because the saddle height is consequent. The weight remains contained but also high perched, requiring a certain skill during maneuvers at low speed.
The engine has been deflated by 27 hp to stick more to the road and adventurer spirit of the DL 1000, but it remains superb. Supple, it resumes at 2000 revs without knocking and is particularly torquey in mid-range then tows with joy up to 7500 revs. Approaching the red zone is unnecessary and unpleasant: the TL’s horses have moved from rev range to the benefit of more “torque and character” in mid-revs. What the engine does very well, and even better. At high speed, the behavior is very healthy and the protection offered is excellent. The saddle also plays the travel card by offering you supreme support and comfort. But the tranquility will be undermined by the set of suspensions: the slightly dry fork returns the big shocks and the rear shock absorber (although very effective on the dynamic level) does not adapt well to a carpet of successive bumps. In this regard, the V-strom does not equal the comfort of a Varadero but shows much more rigor. The gearbox is fast and is equipped with a 6th “overdrive”, to be used only on the motorway but which seriously lowers the engine speed … and consumption. The engine is so efficient that we can afford to start again without thinking about this report as long as the speed does not drop below 110 km / h. Below this threshold, we will be able to take full advantage of the other reports and the playful side of the twin. Efficient, superb, it allows you to play with the V-strom.
This being well balanced, it fits easily in curves and the suspensions which strain the comfort a little now allow you to roll up with ease and to leap from turn to turn. The high center of gravity is felt at the change of angle where we perceive a little resistance; this is quickly forgotten by the agility of the machine and its stability on the angle. The braking does not offer a dignified attack, which is not really a bad thing on this machine – it avoids unbalancing it too much – by insisting a little, the power is there..
The DL 1000 obviously couldn’t offer the best of all the others. But Suzuki offers us a machine full of life, comfortable and playful, and moreover very efficient. Its engine is a treat but it will have to make a place for itself in a segment where the offer is plethoric..
