The 650 Suzuki twin is an evergreen in the best sense of the word, but the Japanese have injected new sportsmanship into it. With great success, as the first test drive with the new Suzuki SV 650 shows.

E.in bread-and-butter bike with 76 horses in the horsepower – seriously? We literally hear the question ringing in our ears. But the answer is clear: yes, of course! After all, the original version of the Suzuki SV 650 paved the way for a few cracks into racing when the SV 650 Cup laid the foundation stone at the end of the 1990s and flushed some of the talents into the IDM. In addition, after years in series sport, the two-cylinder is now fighting for laurels and trophies in the German Twin Trophy and the Gladius Trophy.

Crisp sound despite Euro 4 homologation

A total of 140 parts have been redesigned, 60 of which are from the engine of the Suzuki SV 650. But the increase in performance is not only manifested in the top. The little twin pushes hard across the entire rev range, has no sag and does not fall into a hole.

Even at low and medium speeds you can tell from the engine of the Suzuki SV 650 that the Japanese have done a lot of work with it. It also hangs cleanly on the gas and even runs fluffy soft for a twin: that’s called smooth running – and everything with a crisp sound and still Euro 4 homologation.

Overall setup now much tighter

The gummy, because far too soft, chassis of the Gladius predecessor is also a thing of the past in the Suzuki SV 650. Although nothing can be adjusted on the fork and monoshock, the overall setup is much tighter, which allows experienced pilots to bolt around like a dervish on narrow and wildly winding roads.

Only the somewhat brave brakes of the Suzuki SV 650 remind you that you are not sitting on a bike with a sport concept that has been pulled through to the end. This also applies to the sitting position, which, due to the very low seat height, makes little people very happy, but it confines real sports enthusiasts too much. But that could be remedied for little money with a little will to convert. Anyone who wants to attack in the corresponding cups will do so anyway.

All others should have enough left over for one or the other accessory, which makes the Suzuki SV 650 even more compliant, based on the low sales price of 6390 euros including ABS. In return you get a simple but really fun all-round talent, which, thanks to the motor and handling that is only inspired by playful instinct, has a real sporting spirit.

We’re not talking about a super sports car here, and anyone who swears by 1000s will not think about the Suzuki SV 650. But if you just want to have a bit of fun and want an honest, amazingly powerful and inexpensive bike for country road attacks without any regrets – bingo!
