Since the SV-S 650 arrived, lovers of the Japanese twin version had never stopped hoping for a more muscular version. They could, in an attempt to satisfy themselves, either go to Honda and fall for a VTR, or take a close look at a TLS. The latter, however, suffered from an unflattering reputation; the fault of its untimely guides and its controversial rotary shock absorber. The evil has long been repaired, but TLS will never get rid of this image. And yet, his mill is dynamite. A demonic engine overflowing with torque and full of humor (which will settle down over time). Today, this boiler gives its potential to the V-strom, the Cagiva Raptor and Navigator. In a more exclusive register, Bimota has also chosen it to power its surprising and nasty SB8R.
Suzuki had played a very nice shot with the SVS 650, a small twin-cylinder packed with character that was a hit. A great engine, a lively and flawless part-cycle (except perhaps the fork), a machine not sad, playful, and very endearing. And then, we wanted the same, but in 1000. They did it. Goodbye curves and sensuality, the new design follows the mode and features sharp angles and bill hooks to trim the fairing. The SVS 1000 is a mannequin … on stiletto heels. Thin, light, but particularly tall. The saddle is firm and the seat proudly raised: it looks like riding a 900 SS. Confusing. The new dashboard is original to say the least and displays the essentials and a bit more, though, I would have appreciated a fuel gauge. The code-night light switch has disappeared; cool, we won’t forget to turn them on; but the day your battery gets tired, go start the mill with the lighthouse on … less cool. We will still have won a warning.
Start … DDDjjjiiiii – Plo Plo Plo PLo !!! AAAaahh, this noise, it brings back good memories: the pulsations of the TL 1000 S. Beautiful promises. On the way. The twin Suz makes the machine take off with serenity, helped by its flexibility and its soft controls. The driving position, high perched, is sporty but without excess.
Okay, let’s see what’s in your stomach. Handle, 1/4 turn … BRLLOP – BBBRRRLLLOOOPPPPPPRRR … !!! Yupiii, it grows hard with the true character of a twin. Good torque and frank acceleration with that ounce of temperament that only a twin can give you. It’s pleasant, limit enjoyable. We hold on to a report and let the diet go down on purpose to give ourselves an adrenaline rush by rebalancing the sauce. Lively and with a strong reach, the twin nevertheless seemed easier to me, more linear than on the fire the TLS … less character, less playful.
On the small road full of curves leading to Voglans, the machine spins from turn to turn … but one little thing annoys me: when the machine is sent on the angle at the entrance of the first turn, the The steering damper puts up a small resistance that makes the steering heavier. It will no longer appear during the sequence, but this brief little lockout at each dive into a series of virolos will only have temporarily bothered me: you get used to it very quickly and you thank the shock absorber when you start to seriously tease. Sespecially that the front wheel tends to like to shed. Firm suspensions will instinctively take you to smooth roads. Come on, I’ll save you the best for last.
Arriving at high speed on a roundabout, I press lightly on the brake, let the pads bite with the characteristic dzzjjzziii then insist more frankly … and find myself with the helmet hitting the bubble. an incredible bite, worthy of kawasaki. Surprisingly, Suz didn’t get us used to it.
The front crashes into the asphalt and the machine comes to a halt. There, I could have smiled if this demonic braking had not sent my # censored # on impact against the tank…
What the TLS was criticized for was its moped autonomy. The descendants are unfortunately no better. With a consumption close to 8 L and a tank not really huge, a stage of 200 km is difficult to imagine, especially with a muscular pace..
Fun, of course, but without falling into the hysterical. The big SVS does not dazzle like the bubbly little sister. Its charm is elsewhere, less noticeable at first contact, deeper … softly delivered over time. This new SV will not be a “beast to be tamed” but a companion that we will appreciate on a daily basis … with relish.
