There are certainly always reasons why motorcycles have certain series tires. There may be economic or political considerations behind this, sometimes long-term contracts, sometimes also special emphasis on the function. This also applies to the Suzuki V-Strom 1000, even the new Euro 4 model continues to roll on the old and not exactly dewy Bridgestone BW 501/502, while new tires have been specially developed for the new V-Strom 650 XT. But when you change tires for the first time, the V-Stromer can switch to other tires.
As part of the endurance test, MOTORRAD tried over 50,000 kilometers of alternatives for the Suzuki V-Strom 1000. And there the testers filtered out a clear favorite.
Bridgestone BW 501/502
Bridgestone BW 501/502: The original equipment manufacturer’s tires for the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 seem antiquated. They rob the motorcycle of its nimble footing and steering precision. The tire reluctantly turns in, especially at high speeds. But it shines with the best straight-line stability. The wet grip is behind that of the competition, and the feedback should also be better.
Bridgestone A40: The A40 pleases with a short warm-up time, fine handling properties, neutral steering behavior and good grip level. When braking in an inclined position, it only stands up slightly. The A40 provides good feedback. When driving the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 briskly over transverse joints and bumps, however, the tire reacts a little nervously. Overall, a good and balanced tire.
Continental RoadAttack 2: The Contis harmonize perfectly with the Suzuki V-Strom 1000. Thanks to excellent self-damping, they cover up the deficits of the fork set-up. Precise steering, stable and easy to handle, the Contis pull their course, convince with a great grip level and barely perceptible righting moment when braking. The wet grip is great, the limit area is very wide.
Dunlop TrailSmart: The Dunlop is a balanced tire with high self-damping. On the Suzuki V-Strom 1000, it impresses with precise steering behavior and high cornering stability, but in terms of handling it is just behind the tires from Conti and Pirelli. Ride comfort, straight-line stability and grip level are excellent. When it is wet, the Trail-Smart plays in the first league.
Metzeler Tourance Next: The Metzeler tires leave a great impression. With good grip, the tire acts neutrally up to high lean angles, and also runs stably in a straight line. The Tourance Next take the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 some of its handiness, but at the same time convince with a very wide and good-natured limit area as well as impeccable wet grip.
Pirelli Scorpion Trail II: For the Suzuki V-Strom 1000, the Scorpion Trail II is the clear tire recommendation. The V-Strom goes around the corner with precise steering and clear feedback. It drives with a stable track on the motorway. The Pirellis convey a lot of trust and make the Suzuki appear 20 kilos lighter. The wet grip is at the top level and clearly distances the competition.
