Introducing the next circuit terror, the most powerful and lightest in the GSX-R 1000 line, Suzuki’s ultimate weapon … when it’s ready. You can already appreciate the pastic, the promises and the technological advances of this future bomb; without knowing the outcome. It is not for nothing that Suzuki presented this bike as a GSX-R Concept. The machine is not yet finished, and although the development is almost complete with an arrival expected in 2016 (but in which quarter?), The firm shows us the absolute but not the essential. We will therefore have to wait, but let’s hope not too long because the big Gex announces heavy, and big.
Not on the design side, singularly lacking in audacity. Its features allow you to immediately recognize the GSX-R paw. Even without the omnipresent blue and the “ZUKI” on the sides, we recognize it without hesitation. The face calls out, nothing more. Between the air vents inherited from the SRAD era is placed a beacon hesitating between the cyclopia of a Hayabusa and an MV-Agusta F4. Two bright whiskers, however, make the look more nervous. At the rear, the complexity of the old style has given way to a sleek headlight. In appearance, the new GSX-R 1000 is less threatening. However, the competition will not take the threat lightly and judge only the technique. Especially since the past of this ex-queen of the circuits easily awakens bad memories in the track girls of yesterday.
It had a hell of a GSX-R 1000 engine since 2001. Even overtaken by recent blocks, it continued to provide top performance. Patience will pay off, because passion has always returned stronger to the heart of blue and white sportswomen. Let’s start with a whole new bloc, forced to become a terror to restore all its prestige to Gex. The 4-cylinder 999 cm3 does not yet communicate on its power. One can however count without too much risk on a good 200 horses, barrier where seems to stabilize the whole of the Japanese production. The previous one still provided 185 donkeys; which would make a power gain of 8%. On the innovation side, the boiler will talk. It is the first hypersport engine to be equipped with variable valve timing, the VVT.
How it works ? Like the oil pressure system of the Kawasaki GTR 1400 ??? Not at all. Suz’s engineers chose their own path, and it smoked in their brains. Let’s try to keep it simple: steel balls are placed in the toothed wheel of the intake cam. When the engine takes turns, the centrifugal force pushes the balls which will fit into the grooves and modify the valve opening time. This process makes it possible to fill the engine better at low and mid-speed while optimizing power at high speed..
Let’s stay in the breech and in the ACT corner. The cams now actuate latches. A solution which should make it possible to further increase the engine speed. The red zone starts at 14,500 rpm on the 2016 GSX-R 1000, 500 rpm more than before. The admission also saw changes in the injection. The 1000 Gex has been fitted with double injectors since 2005. One of the ramps moves into the air box and starts up once the engine is in revs to produce more power at high speed. At the end of the road, the Suzuki Exhaust Tuning Alpha (SET-A) adds a whole series of valves to optimize the flow of exhaust gases. One in the junction of the tubes of the two central cylinders and another in the duct of the tubes of the side cylinders. This further improves the mid-range response. With the valve located between the catalyst and the silencer, the exhalation is now controlled and channeled by three Exup.
The most powerful, the lightest, the most aerodynamic of all the 1000 GSX-R among the 6 generations. Here is Suzuki’s intro for this performance ogress. The lightest before, it was the K5 / K6, with 200 kgs fully loaded. The L6 (L7?) Should therefore fall from this barrier. Still it will need a chassis up to the task. On that side, we never had too much to complain about. But the competition is advancing, and if it will be hard to beat it, a lot of work has been done to get up to speed, or even a little more.
If nothing is mentioned on the frame, the mass is more generous in terms of suspension. Like the new Kawasaki ZX-10R, the GSX-R 1000 is equipped with the latest Showa fork, the BFF. An inverted model with offset cartridge, similar to those used by the best competition machines. It allows a better work and a more constant cushioning. It ends with good stuff, Brembo 4-piston calipers fixed radially, unfortunately added to standard hoses. On this point, the Kawa does better, with superb and formidable M50 jaws, 330 mm discs and aviation hoses. The rear shock is also a Showa, the BFRC in its Lite evolution. Who cares about the name; the important thing is that it is lighter, easier to adjust and optimizes traction.
Ah, precisely, motor skills. While most trailblazers in the segment, a slew of roadsters, trails, GTs and even the Guzzi V7 II are now equipped with traction control, the GSX-R still didn’t offer it. Gap filled, with also a lot of electronic equipment that has become essential to stay in the race for performance. The list is beautiful, almost like a machine from SBK. So the Traction Control is installed, with 10 adjustment possibilities (maximum 8 in the competition). We can adjust it while driving, if we do not accelerate.
That’s not all. The 2016 GSX-R 1000 is also equipped with ABS, an up / down shifter to up and down gears without using the clutch, a starting assistant, and S-DMS with 3 maps injection. The dashboard changes radically by adopting a tablet form. You can find all the useful information there, but it is not very cheerful; and then, was it so complicated to install a TFT screen to have more colors?!? If that’s any consolation, the Gex fell in love with LED technology and couldn’t care less. Flashers, headlights, brake light, license plate lighting, position lights, daytime running, nighttime … everything.
It should be remembered that there are still some details to be refined and therefore Suzuki has not told us everything about this new and very important chapter of the GSX-R 1000. Several things are certain. 1 / Suzuki has gone all out to come back to dominate the circuits and the championships. 2 / With all its improvements and the abundance of electronics, the price will take turns too. 3 / It’s bad luck to start a season with her as we have no information on her availability. 4 / Once validated and available, she could well regain the only place where she feels comfortable: the first.
