La Bandit celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2006. The perfect opportunity to get a makeover. And as the youngest has already been there recently, she might as well steal her new clothes (anyway, it’s been like that since the appearance of this family). The GSF therefore takes on the same costume as the 650, namely the restyled fork crown for the S version and the small headlight cowling for the Naked. The rest of the aesthetic evolutions also come out of the same mold: scoops on the side of the frame above the engine, new saddle in 2 parts and new side covers behind the carburetor ramp. To distinguish the 1200 from the 650, just take a look at the side cases, which are chrome on the 12. Tokico brake calipers are no longer 6 but 4 pistons, the fork slightly different and the exhaust is no longer fixed by 3 large screws as on the previous one (pity; you could change the pot in a few strokes of the screwdriver). Hopefully the Hamamatsu engine manufacturers have looked at the carbs and given a little big character to the 4 cylinders. Filled and torquey, the big oil and air cooled mill had lost a bit of its big mouth during the evolution of the Bandit in 2001. It went very well for the 650, there is no reason for it to be different for B12. Following Suzuki’s pricing policy, the GSF 1200 is offered as the most affordable big roadster on the market.
Trial :
A big roadster always has this faculty of intimidation due to its rank. A little something that provokes this kind of phrase in the timid: “Ouhla! It’s too big for me; I could never hold on to it …”. So before judging, sit down on the new B12. With little things, we can make a big whole. Narrower frame at the level of the seat, slimmer and height-adjustable saddle, shorter tank by 3 cm, it’s not much in absolute terms but it allows many people to put their feet on the tarmac. “I’m not tall enough” will no longer be an excuse.
We are always installed naturally and serenely on the Bandit, now a little closer to the controls and a bit less comfortably – the saddle offers you a little less. The Suzuki’s powerful breath is predisposed to take you far and long, as long as you can withstand the pressure of the air on the helmet. In the S version, the semi-fairing protects your bust but not above shoulder level. Too bad – high bubble option recommended if you ride far and often.
The clientele of the Big Bandit is not that of the big aggressive roadsters like the Z 1000, FZ1 or S4Rs. Because the Suzuki is not a follower of the whip and the whip power. Engine level, not much has changed: just a catalyzed exhaust and an air injection system in the exhaust ducts to make it pass Euro 2. The 4 cylinder air / oil cooled is a big peaceful muscle, generous , always available to relaunch beautiful times and fiery acceleration. What a pleasure to know that there is always something that will respond to the right grip, regardless of the rpm and without giving you a hard time – the grinder is very flexible, considerate and dosable. Just like the braking which does not seem to have suffered from the loss of 2 pistons per caliper.
One of the big advantages of the part-cycle of B12 is this natural efficiency which does not impose any instructions for use. Easy, worry-free and stable, the Suz suits its status as a very homogeneous big bike. It is only on the side of the suspensions that she fishes a little – these perform their tasks well but we would appreciate a little less firmness..
With a good turning radius and great flexibility, the city does not scare him. This does not mean that she will fight against the new generation of street-fighter. For this, Suzuki is surely preparing something for us, as is the case in its 600 range: the Bandit for everyone, the GSR for those who like more body..
