The big RM-Z never did things by halves, nor wanted to compromise. Basically, a motocross must do three vital things: move forward, turn and stop – and that better than any other. For its 14th anniversary, the RM-Z 450 was completely redesigned in 2018 and special attention was paid to the winning balance. Fortunately, the RM-Z 450 can build on 26 national and world championships won, including five AMA 450 motocross titles and two AMA 450 super cross titles. To this success story is now added an engine, a chassis. and a completely redesigned electronic system and, moreover, a radically renewed aesthetic.
The result ? A more powerful, more balanced and more competitive RM-Z 450 than ever.
For a dazzling start
A ‘good start’ is more than decisive in MX. This is what the Suzuki Holeshot Assist Control (S-HAC) offers. The updated 3-stage S-HAC system is an essential part of the electronic system of the RM-Z 450. This system evaluates the throttle position and gear selection and then adjusts the ignition time to match. optimize engine performance for fast starting.
All of this is handled at lightning speed, without rider intervention – a brilliant feat of motocross engineering. By interpreting the position of the accelerator and the gear engaged, the S-HAC constantly modifies the timing in order to maximize the power delivered during the three critical stages of starting, including: the exact moment of starting, the passage of the gate and acceleration on the first straight line. Regardless of the rider, track conditions or the nature of the starting block – dirt, mud or concrete – the S-HAC automatically adapts to deliver the fastest and most powerful thrust possible. Six seconds after start-up, the system returns the ignition timing to normal operation or when the pilot shifts into fifth gear or when the throttle is closed, giving the pilot sufficient time to dash from the gate to the gate. first corner.
The S-HAC version of the new RM-Z 450 offers the rider the choice of three configurations that are easily selectable by means of a switch installed on the handlebars. Mode “A” is intended for hard surfaces such as a concrete, clay or dirt starter block, where control of wheel slip is essential for a good start. For 2018, the “A” mode algorithms are updated to provide even finer control to the rider when the throttle opens and an improved traction feel during critical moments of initial start-up. Mode “B” is the mode suitable for normal earth conditions. Pilots can also select the “Off” setting to keep the standard ignition timing.
Power all the way
In motocross, you need to set off immediately – out of the gate and into the bends – and descend the slopes at a lightning pace. In order to provide a stronger winning balance for riders, the RM-Z 450’s redesigned engine torque is lower, with a generally flattened torque curve, faster and more easily controllable throttle response as well as higher maximum power.
All of this is linked to a full range of changes to the intake and fuel system. Inside the air box, the air filter opening is now widened by 30% for better air passage and an MXGP style fender helps deflect mud and dirt for better airflow. preserve the engine. The exhaust pipe from the air box to the fuel injection block is also straighter and thus reduces intake resistance for more power in all speed ranges. Likewise, the throttle body has been revised and therefore provides a more homogeneous air-fuel mixture, which further increases power while ensuring a smooth acceleration feel. The higher fuel pump pressure strengthens the air-fuel mixture for better response and the elimination of throttle coupling improves the feeling of acceleration.
The fuel injector spray path is now directed upward to directly reach the throttle butterfly valve for a more efficient blast. The shape of the intake port has been updated for better swirling flow of charge entering the cylinder, boosting power at all engine speeds. The shape of the intake port matches the new high-lift camshaft profile, further increasing intake efficiency and engine output. In the combustion chamber, a new design of the piston ribs adds strength and durability to meet the higher output of the engine. New muffler ensures compliance with the latest sound level regulations.
Maximum traction
The new electronic systems of the RM-Z 450 cooperate flawlessly with the pilot to divert power to the ground. To maximize traction, the Engine Control Module (ECM) automatically adjusts ignition timing and fuel injection based on throttle position, engine speed, and gear engaged. The RM-Z 450’s first traction management system debuted in 2008 and the second generation arrived in 2013. Now the ECU operates within the third generation traction management system of the RM -Z 450 1.6 times faster data processing and 2.5 times more memory capacity than the first generation system.
Control of turns
The Suzuki RM-Z 450 gives the rider sharper handling, clearer feel and better control than ever before. The new lightweight swingarm dramatically improves cornering performance, whether gliding along a berm or diving into an inside line. The fork crown tube has been moved back 10mm resulting in a wheelbase of 1480mm and more weight distributed forward for more agility and stability.
At the chassis level, advancements include a more rectangular cross section of the main spars, improved front-to-rear stiffness and generally optimized stiffness with a weight reduction of 700g. All of this directly enhances cornering performance as well as impact absorption capacity and stability. The swingarm overhaul features thinner materials to achieve a 100g weight reduction and optimized stiffness which results in better performance and stability when cornering.
Other chassis upgrades such as new hexagonal type rails at the subframe increase the capacity of the airbox and stiffen the whole while having more slender dimensions to leave room for the new Showa Blance Free Rear Cushion rear shock. In the cockpit, the straighter line of the Renthal Fatbar aluminum handlebars helps riders shift their weight forward for better cornering. Finally, a lighter guide bar provides smoother contact and improved durability, while the water pump and magneto cover are protected by an engine fairing..
Sophisticated suspension
The new Showa front and rear suspension provides better response to the rider and good ground following. It absorbs forces better, enhances the stability of the chassis and the feel of the terrain and offers more comfort. The rider benefits with better control, faster lap times and less fatigue under harsh training or racing conditions..
Up front, the SFF-Air fork from the previous generation of the RM-Z 450 was replaced with an updated Showa spring fork. It offers comfortable use for a wide range of customers. The triple upper strap is also lighter with optimized dimensions. At the rear, the new Showa Balance Free Rear Cushion (BFRC) shock is based on the same technology as the new sporty GSX-R1000R which balances the pressure above and below the piston for better travel control. and thus attenuate reactions to bumps and bumps, even when braking suddenly.
New rims and new tires
Lighter rims and new Bridgestone tires maximize grip to improve agility and control under a variety of different track conditions. With a black finish imparting a factory look, the new rims have an optimized cross section that maintains strength while reducing critical rotational mass by 70g in total. The bike comes with latest generation Bridgestone Battlecross X30 tires.
More agile. Faster. Higher. Harder.
Motocross is an unforgiving discipline, which requires cutting-edge motorcycle technology and hard training from the rider in order to be on top. Suzuki incorporated over 40 years of racing engineering into the RM-Z 450 to make the most punchy, treble, balanced and comfortable motocross machine in the company’s history..
Factory aesthetics
The 2018 RM-Z 450 is presented with a new look that enriches Suzuki’s already strongly distinctive design. The evolution begins with “the DNA of the beak” projecting an arrow shape from the side scoops to the fork through the radiator guards. With its Suzuki yellow finish as well as new team graphics and logos, the most powerful RM-Z 450 of all time is instantly recognizable. The new aesthetic also includes the shape of the saddle which facilitates the transition between sitting and standing and the shifting of the weight forwards or backwards..
