Suzuki SFV 650 GLADIUS 2015

When Suzuki presented its turbulent little SV 650 roadster more than a decade ago, the brand mainly marketed a real little monster, as powerful as the Ducati of the same name and competing. A scarecrow in the category, overwhelmingly successful… which gradually withered away, the 2nd generation of SV having much less convincing than the 1st. Success wanted to return with this Hammamatsu twin roadster: the Gladius. A machine with a very Italian style and very Japanese characteristics.

Code name: SFV 650. Nickname: Gladius. This word sounds like a provocation. Should this be seen as more than a threat to competition? Certainly ; when we know that it is the Latin name of the sword used by the Roman legions of antiquity. Funny coincidence: MV-Agusta gave a version of his Brutale the name Gladio.
The SFV therefore has many Italian tendencies, in its name as in its principles. Let’s take a closer look. A sculpted Brutale-style lighthouse, a trellis half-frame connected to aluminum plates … oh no! it looks like, but they are in reality caches … The essential remains: a lively and punchy L-shaped twin … Here is the most serious and most generous competitor of the Ducati 696 Monster. The design of the Gladius is not as rare and compact as that of the Italian; he officiates with more gentleness but also with nervousness. However, we would have appreciated another pot; this one seems to come from a scruffy chinese motorcycle.

The glance passed, everyone will be delighted that the Gladius takes again the famous twin of the SV. A praised twin cylinder since its inception. For the SFV, Suzuki revised it somewhat. Aesthetically, with redesigned casings … and especially at the level of the camshafts, to make the mechanics more flexible and available. The punch will not lose because the transmission has been shortened, and worse, the engine manufacturers had to keep a large part of the 74 hp. The tank is less generous with only 14.5 liters – We could hardly care less as the softness of its curves and its two-tone tones are pleasant. But do not panic for autonomy: the ignition is entrusted to 2 iridium spark plugs per cylinder, gasoline sprayed by 10-hole injectors, and the on-board electronics are optimized..

Beginners, SV fans and machine enthusiasts in this category will be delighted to know that SFV keeps a lot of ideas from SV. Its engine, of course, but also its size, but also its technical solutions. Standard fork with brake discs 290 mm in diameter gnaked by double piston calipers (optional ABS provided), banal swingarm (fortunately it is painted black). We are far from the Italian stuff, but in terms of price, it makes a hell of a difference. we also note the return of the traditional headlight with bulbs and the adoption of a new dashboard. A cousin of that of GSR, not particularly cheerful, but very practical with its gear indicator engaged.

The Time for SV Has Passed – Has the Time for SFV Come? In any case, the machine seems cheerful from all points of view. The color scheme, with frame and rims that change colors depending on the version, the remarkable twin, an adjustable preload fork (let’s hope they have revised the hydraulics), a saddle not too high, and the ease known from the SV . Well, it’s clear, we want to try it right away. The ER-6 N laughs a little less.
A beautiful plumage on a very nice ramage, what more do you want? Ah yes, a gasoline gauge maybe…
