Adaptation to EU law from 2021

Switzerland is aligning its driving license regulations with existing EU law. From 2021, 16-year-olds should be able to drive 125cc motorcycles.

The Swiss Federal Council has now approved a new driving license regulation that aligns the national regulations with the existing rules in the EU. The new driving license rules are to come into force on January 1, 2021.

In the future, motorcycles with a displacement of up to 125 cm3 can be driven from the age of 16. The 125cc scooters and motorcycles may have a maximum of 11 kW (15 HP). Equipment with ABS is mandatory. The minimum age for the driving license category A1 in Switzerland is currently 18 years.

The Federal Council also gave the green light for new regulations in the smaller classes. In the AM class, 15-year-olds will be allowed to drive small motorcycles up to 50 cm³ and a maximum of 45 km / h. Here, the minimum age in Switzerland was so far 16 years.

Direct entry into class A is restricted

However, the Federal Council has restricted direct entry into the unrestricted class A. Until now, anyone aged 25 and over could enter directly. From 2021, a motorcycle with a maximum of 35 kW (48 PS) output in class A2 must be driven for at least two years. Here the Swiss deviate from EU law. In the EU, direct entry into class A is possible from the age of 24.
