1290 Super Duke R versus Yamaha MT-09

Theory and practice: Can a 115 hp mid-range machine like the Yamaha MT-09 really eat up a real power monster like the 1290 Super Duke R.?

Recently, some readers were astonished to discover that a 172 hp KTM 1290 Super Duke R, reverently called “The Beast”, in MOTORCYCLE pull-through measurements of one Yamaha MT-09 is ironed. In plain language: Pulling 60 to 100 km / h: 3.3 seconds for the MT-09 compared to 3.4 seconds for the Super Duke. So it was in the tests. Maybe a measurement or misprint? The measurements were correct. First of all, the great values speak for the Yamaha, whose three-cylinder pulls off mightily even at the lowest speeds. In addition, there is the low weight, at 192 kilograms on the MOTORRAD scales, the MT-09 was around 21 kilograms lighter than the Super Duke R..

But let’s analyze it in more detail. The MT-09 is geared to a theoretical top speed of just over 200 km / h in the last gear. It turns 2700 rpm at 60 km / h and provides a pulling force of over 1000 Newtons on the rear wheel. Against it is KTM Translated to a top speed of over 290 km / h, at 60 km / h the V-Twin turns just 2000 rpm and develops less power on the rear wheel than the Yamaha. An extremely low speed for the huge, short-stroke KTM-V2 with its low centrifugal masses. That he even accepts full throttle here is only possible thanks to modern ride-by-wire. In practice, no driver will torture his machine in such a way that one downshifts to load through.

But why this measurement procedure? Behind this is a problem that generations of testers have dealt with. In fact, it is not fair to compare a machine that has been translated to almost 300 km / h with one that has been translated to a good 200 km / h. On the other hand, you want to have comparable values for everyone. There have been various proposals for solutions to this topic. For example, moving the speed window depending on the performance category. Or select a speed window for each machine depending on the maximum speed. All of them are not good ideas because they are far too complicated, not comparable and hardly comprehensible. The dilemma cannot be resolved.

The basic idea behind the standard pull-through measurement from 60 km / h was that, in practice, people like to accelerate out of a town in the last gear. Modern machines have a lot of trouble with this balancing act from 60 to 300 km / h. Especially since many machines nowadays are intentionally long geared in order to lower the speed level and consumption. By the way: when the KTM is accelerated in fourth gear, which can reach over 200 km / h, it delivers more than twice as much tractive power to the rear wheel.

So you have to look carefully and consider the other driving performance measurements. Because the KTM can also counteract in sixth gear: if you look at the speed window from 100 to 140 km / h, it is clearly ahead with 3.4 to 4.0 seconds. Which can be expected given the difference in displacement and performance. Nevertheless: Both candidates deliver great pulling values at a high level.
