Euro 3 classic: Yamaha XJR 1300

Air-cooled balancing hum

The Yamaha XJR 1300 has been in the range since 1995. Now the last hour of the evergreen has struck.

The evergreen Yamaha XJR 1300 has struck the last hour. Since 1995 it has been in the range of the brand with the distinctive tuning forks. Back then, she saw the light of day as a 1200s. And just like in the last few years of the last millennium, its massive engine was and still is the focus, automatically catches everyone’s attention and forms the center of the large naked bike. Although the unit was already a few years old when the first XJR appeared, it carried many motorcycle tourists around the world on the boarded FJ 1200 or on small streets on a leisurely excursion on Sunday morning.

The fat foursome has retained its basic character over the years. Powerful and paired with a suppleness that only large inline four-cylinder units can offer, it pushes horses and riders forward from idle. Engage the highest gear quickly, then the clutch hand has a break. The ribbed, air-cooled four-cylinder engine doesn’t worry the speed, it always has enough power. At least almost, because naturally he’s already running out of breath upstairs. At 8000 rpm it mobilizes its 98 hp. Then Sense is with the revving. The wind-cooled Yamaha XJR 1300 doesn’t have to do more than that, because this level of vigor is sufficient for everything that tourist-oriented naked bike drivers have on the should-do list.

Not a means of transportation, but a friend

Feel the wind in your face, glide with pleasure, that’s what the Yamaha XJR 1300 and its predecessors are made for. If you are too sporty, you will quickly reach the limits of the chassis, which was set up somewhat unhappily until 2006. At the front there was pampering comfort, but at the back it was all the rougher. It got better later. The lack of lean angle, also due to the wide engine, persisted over the years. The last update that Yamaha launched in 2016 has not changed this either. Optical retouching with retro bonds should mobilize buyers again. As a life-prolonging measure, this did not quite work.

The Yamaha XJR 1300 cedes, poor sales, missing ABS and other Euro 4 requirements are responsible. It’s a shame in any case. The XJR was the prototype of the air-cooled, classic naked bike for many years. Look at it, drive, swipe over it, enjoy, feel happiness. Binding you emotionally, touching you, she was really good at that. It was just a motorcycle too, but one in the best sense of the word. Not a means of transportation, but a friend. With rough edges to rub in, but that’s what you need for a happy relationship. It’s over now.
