KTM SX-E 5

Electric junior crosser in the test

With the SX-E 5, the first electric junior crosser, KTM could revolutionize young motorcycle racing. Because: The whisper-quiet little electric vehicles open up completely new perspectives.

The prospects are delightful: a motocross track next to the local football field or an off-road course on Papa’s orchard – that could soon become a reality. At least for young knights in the galleries. Because with KTM is the first time a well-known manufacturer deals with the topic of electric mini crossers. On the chassis side, the SX-E 5 is essentially based on the 50 cm³ children’s crosser. Instead of the combustion engine, there is an air-cooled, 5 kW (7 PS) electric motor with a battery with 0.9 kWh capacity between the frame tubes. For orientation: the battery of a standard electric bike stores around 0.5 kWh, the battery of the KTM Freeride E-XC 3.9 kWh.

Little stromer

Stromer is very easy to drive

With a rear frame that can be screwed on in two positions and an optional lowering kit, the seat height of the Bonsai-Crosser can be varied by 10 centimeters (560 to 665 mm) and thus covers the age range between three and ten years. The performance is also served age-appropriately via six driving modes. The differences are enormous: Level one fits with very subtle propulsion and top speed at walking pace for the first motor-driven meters on two wheels. In level six, the baby crosser hisses around the slope in the pace of a 50 cm³ combustion engine. The tunnel e-mobile uses the conceptual advantages of an electric motor in all modes. The maximum torque is available from the very first turn, and there is no need for a gearbox or clutch. The junior test rider from MOTORRAD, Leon Haun (10 years), quickly got used to the unconventional bike. The electric motor pushes out of corners more directly than the KTM 50 SX equipped with a centrifugal clutch. Compared to a 65 cm³ Crosser with manual transmission, the Stromer is child’s play to drive anyway.

And how long will the electricity last? KTM declares 25 minutes with a fast pilot and two hours with a beginner. That seems realistic. Ridden in level five on an indoor supercross track, the charge indicator showed around 50 percent capacity after 30 minutes. The battery is charged with the external charger (409 euros) in around an hour. However, the SX-E 5 does not have a quick-change system for a second battery (877 euros) like the one on the Freeride E-XC. Replacing the battery should take around 20 minutes. KTM would like to have a proud 4,995 euros (plus charger) for the SX-E 5.

Conclusion

The KTM SX-E 5 will revolutionize offroad sport for young people. The fact that young off-roaders can also do their laps behind the house or are no longer tied to training times on the motocross track will open up completely new opportunities and target groups for the sport.
