Motorcycle rider Guy Martin is still getting hurt … on his bike
Mechanic, motorcycle rider, media-funny phenomenon, almost pro cyclist: Guy Martin is everything … except a super hero! As he set his sights on the record for the Tour of Britain by bike – set by another biker – a painful beast forced him to give up. Damned…
The objective was ambitious, as is often the case with Guy Martin: to beat the record for the Tour of Great Britain by bike and by the coast – so much so! – detained for over 25 years by a guy just as crazy as him – a biker, of course! By 1984, Nick Sanders had traveled 4,802 miles (7,728 km) in 22 days…
The two men – or supermen? – met on November 10 (at the back of a pub, editor’s note?) and Nick was delighted that Guy is embarking on this adventure: "he’s really a good guy, he reminds me of me 20 years ago. Good luck to him, I fully support him. Go Guy! ", testified Mister Sanders, also holder of several motorcycle records (go see his but come back to MNC, because this story is not over!).
Departing on December 5 from his home (in Grimsby, on the east coast of England), Guy Martin hoped to be back before Christmas. Finally, the "Poupou du TiTi" (12 participations in the Tourist Trophy, 15 podiums and no victory, a "record"!) Unfortunately returned much earlier due to an injury…
From day one, "Gaille" began to feel pain in his left Achilles tendon. Hard to the bad, "I said to myself that I was going to put my head in the handlebars and make do with it", he recounts on his. A little sore was certainly not going to stop this crazy bike, whose annual counter already displayed nearly 18,000 km before his departure. !
"I continued to chain the terminals and I joined John o ‘Groats (north-eastern tip of Scotland, editor’s note) in 4 days and 8 hours, about 1300 km", calculates the obstinate motorbikecyclist. Insufficient to beat the record, the performance was still very respectable: a quick simulation on Googlemaps allowed us to estimate that by taking a few shortcuts, it takes 63 hours to connect the two cities….
"My leg was aching more and more, I thought I could go on and buck it all in 30 days, but I knew I would have juggled for a long time afterwards and it could even have resulted in serious long term damage, putting in peril my great cycling trip planned for next year "…
Disappointed but certainly not dejected, "Gaia!" has therefore wisely decided to put his bicycle in the back of his workshop to give his leg time to recover: "I’m back to work and I realize that I need to listen to my body more", realizes in a flash of lucidity the sympathetic !
Remember that last year, Guy Martin fractured his back – for the second time – when he fell from his S1000RR during the race (which he won 11 times). During a recent meeting with his "friends" Facebook, the pilot admitted having had a lot of fun following this … So, will we see him again at the Tourist Trophy? A priori, no…
“I do my own shopping,” Guy said a month ago. "My Martek (editor’s note!) Is on his way to New Zealand where I have to participate in a hill climb. I’m going to try to beat the Nurburgring lap record on a motorcycle, and then maybe I will build a car for run at Pikes Peak, then I’ll move on. I’ll do more flat track next year, "predicts the super hero hyperactive.
"It’s the same shit happening"
"I always get offers from great TT teams, the bigger ones, with good contracts, and it was tempting … But I already gave, it’s good. The only reason that made me think to these proposals for so long, it was because I didn’t want to regret not having done it ", specifies Guy.
"But when I found myself nailed to a couch with my back broken, I knew I had had enough. It’s the same shit that happens year after year. I did the best I could. I could as an amateur pilot, to go faster I would have to devote my whole life to this and I’m not ready to do it. But read Worms To Catch, it’s all in, "concludes the only author to have appeared three years on the top-selling list of "non-fiction" books by the very serious Sunday Times. Another record for "Martine" !
