  • North West 200 2017 : Irwin and Ducati beat Seeley and BMW
  • North West 200 2016 : Records in shambles

"I concentrated and made sure to take all the lines well", explains Irwin, teammate of Be Wiser Ducati in British Superbike. "I did a perfect lap so I knew if anyone who followed me half a second they had really stripped! From that point on I was able to do the race I wanted.".

The expected fight between Glenn Irwin, Alastair Seeley and Michael Dunlop could not take place, killed in the bud by the domination of Irwin: Dunlop (Tyco BMW) finished second in the second Superbike race at almost 10 seconds from the native of Carrickfergus while Lee Johnston (Honda Racing Fireblade) finished third.

"I thought I had ruined my race"

Previously, Irwin had suffered a little heat on the fourth lap of the first race. "Sometimes, when you don’t attack fully, you don’t change gears as firmly as you need to and I had a false neutral point when I got to the Juniper chicane", explains the Ducati rider who even "believed ruining the race ", before recovering and winning with less than a second ahead of Dean Harrison (Silicone Kawasaki) while Michael Rutter (Bathams BMW) finished third.

2018 North West 200: the best moments of Superbike racing

Absent from the podium in Superbike, Alastair Seeley largely made up for it in Supersport by signing his 24th victory over the North West! The 38-year-old even shattered the 600 cc lap record on his Yamaha R6 in the first race: 117.913 mph in his last lap (188 km / h), after a first Superposrt victory on Thursday night..

"I was trying to let him guess where I was going"

"I evaluated everyone during the first laps, so I decided to change my strategy", explains Seeley who won ahead of James Hillier (Quattro Plant Kawasaki) and Lee Johnston (Padgett’s Honda): "I have tried not to make mistakes, because when you exceed the limits you immediately lose the advantage ".

In Superstock, Seeley regained the lead over Peter Hickman (Smith’s BMW) who won Thursday night’s race, after impressive braking in the Juniper chicane. "We tested different trajectories and I tried to let him guess where I was going to go", laughs the most successful pilot of the North West 200.

Thanks to this hat-trick on the 2018 edition (two victories in Supersport and one in Superstock), Seeley received the trophy of "Man of the Meeting" from the hands of Louise Dunlop, wife of the late Robert Dunlop.
