KTM takes back the desert with its new 790 Adventure R Rally
KTM triples the bet with its 790 Adventure R Rally, a new even sharper version of its 94 horsepower trail. This strongly typed all-terrain version will be produced in a limited series of 500 copies. Presentation.
The KTM 790 Adventure R does not seem racy enough for the "real" off-road yet? Despite its high-travel suspensions (240 mm), its deactivatable assistances – ABS sensitive to tilt and traction control – its robust protections and its 21 and 18-inch spoke rims? Then its new Rally version is made for you !

This bike designed on the basis of the 790 Adventure R pushes the cursor further towards a committed practice of "off-road", by relying on the enormous experience of the brand in off-road in general and in rally-raid in particular (18 consecutive successes at).
But why go further into this adventurous dimension when the standard 790 Adventure and 790 Adventure R are already proving formidable on all types of terrain? "Because we had the means!", Retorts the KTM marketing director with obvious pride … and a touch of bragging. ?!
"We had the material and the know-how to design the ideal trail bike for our most demanding customers", explains Hubert Trunkenpolz, who mentions "elements very close" to those used on the Dominatrix 450 Rally.
These parts mainly concern the damping: the 790 Adventure R Rally receives an inverted "XPLOR PRO 7548" fork and an "XPLOR PRO 6746" shock absorber from the house brand WP, whose travel increases to … 270 mm (+30 mm )! This elaborate material is fully adjustable by hand and incorporates technology worthy of a factory motorcycle.
The fork thus uses the "Cone Valve" technology that KTM describes as "a conical stop system" which would guarantee "extreme comfort, incredible damping and excellent resistance to bottoming out". Devil ! Same story for the rear element with separate cylinder, whose hydraulics are finely adjusted from two pretty red anodized knobs in addition to the trigger screw.
Small builds abstain !
On the other hand, this enormous range of suspensions induces a significant rise in the seat height, already perched high on the R (880 mm): the specific seat of the 790 Adventure R Rally – completely flat as in enduro – literally reaches new heights with 923 mm (+43 mm) !
Logically, ground clearance is increasing – from 263 to 288 mm -, while MNC detects subtle geometric changes: the wheelbase increases by 7 mm – from 1528 to 1535 mm – and the column angle s ‘opens from 63.7 to 63.8 °. The width of the rims also decreases: 2.15 and 4 inches against 2.50 and 4.50. The notched tires, however, remain in 90/90/21 and 150/70/18 and accommodate reinforced tubes.
The dry weight remains at 189 kg despite the transplant of an Akrapovic silencer, deflectors under the short transparent bubble, notched footrests and carbon protections. The 790 Adventure R Rally also receives a bi-directional shifter as standard, the same as the one from which it takes over the engine..
This 799 cc parallel twin has no modifications: managed by a ride-by-wire accelerator, it develops 94 hp and 88 Nm and has three driving modes including a "Rally" configuration. This motor compatible with the A2 motorcycle license takes place in a tubular steel frame, like all KTM motorcycles – including the !
The 790 Adventure R Rally also receives instrumentation in color tablet form from the standard and R versions, as well as their radial 4-piston calipers. It can carry 20 liters of gasoline, divided between its main tank and its original growths along the twin.
500 copies
This new bike will be built in a limited series of only "500 copies", sold on order. The details of this process as well as the availability and the price of the 790 Adventure R Rally will be communicated "in the coming months", specifies the Austrian manufacturer despite our attempts to know more…
"We can not say more for the moment", replied KTM … In the meantime, the Motorcycle Journal of the Net estimates its price between 15,500 and 16,500 euros, knowing that the 790 Adventure R already costs 13,499 euros and that the quality of the additional equipment of this Rally will inevitably entail an additional cost.
