2019 Honda CB 500 X Test: The Road to X
Honda is refining its CB 500 range for 2019 with technical and cosmetic improvements on the three motorcycles that make it up, particularly on the CB 500 X trail which is evolving the most. First try.

The 2019 CB500X benefits from many improvements (assisted slip clutch, new instrumentation, two-way exhaust silencer) and above all from a 19-inch front wheel which advantageously reinforces its trail look..
the CB500X is available in red, gray, as well as in this very pretty white “Pearl Metalloid White” enhanced with some fluorescent markings.
The size of the CB500X increases noticeably but is also refined thanks to the new design of the side covers and its trim.
The new dashboard is compact and functional, but its readability under the sun is not optimal and the change of indications is not deported to the handlebars.
Like its sisters, the CB500X has a HISS immobilizer system by coded key and a steering lock controlled from the switch.
Aesthetic and rather protective, the screen of the CB500X gains 20 mm in height and remains adjustable over 40 mm with the help of tools (Allen key). Also note the new LED indicators. The new tapered profile handlebars contribute to the aesthetics of the cockpit while offering a good grip of the CB500X. The bubble holders are designed to easily integrate a GPS, the 12 V outlet (optional) being housed nearby.
Single disc braking is sufficiently powerful and very easy to dose with the lever. It is assisted by a discreet ABS but very present if necessary.
The 2019 CB500X benefits like its counterparts from a new twin-ended exhaust silencer with a more attractive sound than before.
The Honda in-line twin is more lively at half-speed thanks to maximum torque obtained 500Xtr / min earlier than on the previous model. This engine also benefits from many small improvements and benefits from an assisted slip clutch which facilitates gear changes..
The front is more aggressive and sleek than before, in the spirit of the brand’s higher displacement trail models such as the Crossrunner or the Africa Twin.
The saddle of the CB500X is refined to facilitate the installation of the feet on the ground, the movements of the pilot and the riding while standing. On the other hand, it remains firm at the level of the passenger seat.
The CB500X benefits from a new shock absorber with single wall body, adjustable in preload in five positions, for an increased travel from 118 to 135mm.
Neutral and easy to place on the angle, the CB500X pulls out perfectly on small winding roads and accepts without complaint a more incisive piloting. The upright and natural driving position favors rides at a relaxed pace, especially as the driver’s wind protection is effective. Dunlop Trailmax Mixroad tires offer good grip in the dry and heat up faster than the D222 of the CBR500R. The return to the handlebars is however less than that of the CB500F roadster equipped with Michelin Pilot Road 5 with a sharper return. Despite a ground clearance increased to 180 mm, it is still easy to rub the footrests in a curve. Versatile, as comfortable in town as on the road, the CB500X offers an excellent use / price compromise. Definitely a good bike to start with, but also for bikers with a low budget.
Thanks to its 19-inch front wheel, increased wheel travel and increased ground clearance, the CB500X can easily navigate tracks and paths. Dunlop Trailsmart Mixtour tires allow foray into paths, preferably dry and not too bumpy. Driving in a standing position does not pose any particular problem in off-road use, the pilot having a good grip of the CB500X between his legs.
Watch out for that very protruding footplate rear part that tends to want to enter the bottom of your pants, preventing you from putting your foot on the ground when you stop. I let you imagine the rest, with ultimately a potentially painful fall … A point to review very quickly !
