What are the competing motorcycles of the new Yamaha Tenere 700 ?
Le Journal moto du Net spends the week riding the eagerly awaited Tenere 700, a new Yamaha trail with a strong all-terrain identity designed on the excellent basis of the MT-07 roadster. Before delivering our verdict on this 72.5 hp for 204 kg (with full tank) motorcycle sold for 9,699 euros, let’s review its main competitors…
The Yamaha Tenere 700, presented as a concept for two and a half years, intends to ride in the glorious footsteps of its predecessor XT500 from 1976 with its rally-raid style..

This eagerly awaited new bike takes the CP2 engine from the and uses a new tubular steel frame, 21 and 18 inch spoked rims, large suspension travel and robust guards. Here is the list of its main rivals.
- 9,950 euros
- 77 hp
- 83 Nm
- 224 kg (with full)
The F750GS and its "sister" were extensively revised last year, with the main changes being the arrival of a steel frame and an 853cc inline-twin assembled in China by Loncin. This road trail shines with its natural balance and the Germanic efficiency of its cycle part.
Its 77 hp and 83 Nm engine is pleasant and powerful enough, despite a weight increase now set at 224 kg. The ridiculous protection of its windshield is one of its flaws, as is its attractive price at the base (€ 9,950) but which flies away quickly with the inevitable options.
Facing the T7, the BMW offers a much more road vision of the trail because of its considerably lower suspension travel and its stick rims, in 19 and 17 inches.
- 13,889 euros
- 95 hp
- 98 Nm
- 232 kg (with full)
The magnificent Honda is among the targets of the Tenere 700, despite its much larger displacement (998 cc against 689) which gives it a clear advantage in terms of power and torque (95 hp and 98 Nm against 72.4 hp and 68 Nm. ). The price is affected: 13,889 euros against 9,699 euros for the Yamaha, or 4,190 euros difference !
Incomparable for the neck (t) p, these two motorcycles? Yes and no: the T7 and the Africa Twin both cultivate a strongly tinted off-road approach with their 21 and 18-inch spoked rims, large suspension travel, raced line and solid guards. (standard metal handguard and shoe).
In addition, Honda is the precursor of this intelligent return to basics in the trails, as opposed to the "maxi" always more efficient, heavier and more expensive. The Tenere 700 is now seeking to take this path, but in an even more accessible way. Note that the Africa Twin is the only motorcycle in its category available with automatic transmission (DCT double clutch).
- 8049 euros
- 69 hp
- 64 Nm
- 217 kg (with full)
It is one of the rare competitors less expensive than the Tenere 700: the Versys 650 is exchanged at the attractive price of 8,049 euros, or an advantage of 1,300 euros for this trail version of the roadster (ex Er-6). Of all the rivals gathered here by MNC, this is the cheapest motorcycle !
Its 645 cc vertical twin cylinder stands the comparison with the Yamaha twin, whether in terms of performance (69 hp and 64 Nm) or joie de vivre: it is a lively, sober and responsive engine. Its featherweight of 217 kg is also among its strengths, as well as its general comfort.
Still, the Kawasaki has trail only in name: 17-inch stick rims, limited ground clearance or non-deactivatable ABS (that of the T7 is to facilitate off-road excursions). It will be difficult, if not impossible, to follow the novelty beyond the asphalt !
- 12,499 euros
- 94 hp
- 88 Nm
- 189 kg (dry)
On paper, the very recent 790 Adventure is one of the designated rivals of the Tenere 700. The two brands are also struggling in the Dakar with prototypes aesthetically close to their production motorcycles. However, if they share a strong rally identity, moss suspensions and spoke rims in 21 and 18 inches, the Austrian is more performance oriented..
Its 799 cc vertical twin – chipped at the – develops 20 more hp (94 hp) and is joined by the services of an electronic accelerator itself connected to sophisticated traction control and several driving modes. Its color instrumentation is also a real tablet. So many "techno" equipment absent from the Yamaha, more basic without neglecting the essential. The slender Tenere nevertheless gives it the brakes in terms of weight: 187 kg dry compared to 189 for the "Katoche" !
- 11,699 euros
- 80 hp
- 85 Nm
- 229 kg (with full)
What a pleasant surprise that this new Guzzi V85TT motorcycle, unveiled this year by the venerable brand of Mandello del Lario! Its successful line exudes a crazy class, at the height of the charm displayed by its V-twin of 853 cc.
Like the Yamaha, the Italian does not capitalize on excessive performance (80 hp and 85 Nm) and is positioned in a relevant way in terms of price: 11,699 euros for the only motorcycle equipped with a cardan shaft in this range of displacement. Despite its 19- and 17-inch spoked rims, the Guzzi is however less convincing off-road. Its weight of 229 kg is also to be taken into account.
It is a motorcycle more designed for the ride on all types of roads, even the most degraded, at the driving pace of its V-twin. The rigor of its cycle part will do wonders and will occasionally allow an off-road excursion, without however hoping to drop the T7 at the top of a dune..
- 8,399 euros
- 71 hp
- 62 Nm
- 213 kg (with full)
The indestructible Suzuki always responds with its V-twin derived from the 645 cc roadster. Its 71 hp and 62 Nm place it on the same footing as the Tenere 700, especially as they are delivered with generous enthusiasm and communicative energy..
However, like the Versys 650, the V-Strom 650 is essentially a road trail with its stick rims (19 and 17 inches) and its ergonomics between roadster and trail. MNC still appreciates its excellent road holding and its tasty general approval, among other things generated by its weight contained at 213 kg. At 8399 euros, it’s a bargain !
Full test of the to follow on MNC: stay tuned !
- 13,200 euros
- 95 hp
- 79 Nm
- 200 kg (dry)
In the large family of the Tiger 800s, the XCX is undoubtedly the one that comes closest to – deviates the least – from the rally-raid philosophy claimed by the Tenere 700. Unlike the more road-going XR models, it s’ Fitted in particular with spoke rims (21 inches at the front, 17 at the rear), long-travel suspensions (220 and 215 mm), hand guards and an aluminum engine guard.
The Tiger 800 is also full of technologies: traction control and disconnectable ABS, configurable engine mapping, cruise control, dual 12V socket, color instrumentation … But you have to select the high-end XCA version to benefit from the LED lights, commodos backlit, heated saddles (!) and central stand … "What The Flute" ?
Efficient cycle part, en-chanteur engine, state-of-the-art equipment … MNC recognizes the Tiger 800’s powerful strengths. But it is also necessary to note its front brake and its comfort of saddle perfectible, as well as extremely high prices: foresee 13,200 euros for the XCX and 14,500 for the XCA…
