Even nastier! This is the philosophy of the new Speed Triple. Its sulphurous reputation will gain even further thanks to this 2005 version. A version which becomes almost wild but always irresistible; and so much Triumph. The Triple is a very important model for the English brand. It is both daring and strategic to re-model it … So, at Hinckley, we didn’t cut corners.
With its two round headlights and its inimitable silhouette, this nasty roadster can be recognized with a furtive glance. The latter will very quickly linger on the new rear of the roadster, very picked up, even truncated, in a Buell style oh so aggressive. Her new ass is protected by 2 exhausts that don’t seem to be laughing. For the look, a black paint on the frame and the single-sided swingarm which accommodates a new rim with 14 resolutely superb spokes. Up front, everything inspires respect. Besides its devilish look, the Speed proudly shows its big black anodized inverted fork finished with radial brake calipers – signed Nissin until 2007, these elements were replaced in 2008 by Brembo monoblocks. Strong to handle the ardor of the English.
The famous 3-cylinder from the factory has made a lot of talk (especially in good) and it will still make the powder speak. The block swells from 955 to 1050 cm3 by increasing the stroke. A benefit of displacement which increases the power to 130 hp (+ 10) with an additional dose of torque obtained 300 rpm earlier. More watts in the mid-range and an even more expressive character, the new Speed triple will delight more than one. The Triumph could not face the future without a few small improvements such as a new gearbox, a new clutch, a pneumatic assembly of 180 instead of the 190 (which will improve handling), a new dashboard …. Beautiful, this element is a real aesthetic gem. it displays a battery of information with the bonus of an engaged gear indicator. Triumph gave it a layer in 2008, modifying in particular the reception to the passenger, until now frankly spartan. A revised saddle, a modified rear shell, and lower footrests will significantly improve the lot of Madame. A new fight is announced in the street between England and Italy: Speed Triple against 1,130 TnT and S4R. The thugs are let loose.
It rumbles, it growls, it expresses itself … And this from low revs. No need to wait until the middle of the tachometer as with the 955 to have the spellbinding melody of the 3-cylinder Britton. A formal notice that fits perfectly with the dark ardor of the new 1,050 cm3. While it also powers the new Sprint ST, its joyous flights are much more expressive in the Speed Triple setting. Exemplary flexibility, the boiler tends the muscle from low revs. Inflated, with lighter parts and a more efficient injection, it only awaits the order of the hand to release the big potato. What a safe! The needle in the tachometer immediately takes a stab of blood as the Speed throws itself forward like a beast at prey. It always expresses itself with its characteristic “velvety”, but with sacred spices in the soup. Impressive on the first 2 thirds of the range of use, the mill seems more polished but still as powerful, until the breaker intervenes. More lively, more generous, more “Bbbrrroouuhhaaahhhhhppp”, the 3 legs is a real big treat.
With this new enthusiasm that inhabits the cavalry, we have the right to expect road behavior that is commensurate with it. And there, England was still strong. True to the frame of the Daytona and guided by a precise and rigorous front end, the Speed Triple gains in agility, in part thanks to the narrower rear tire. The chassis takes everything, nothing moves, the suspensions do an impeccable job. The comfort has somewhat dissolved since the 955 and yet, we gain in the change, especially from the point of view of efficiency. The only downside to this roadster packed with character comes from the braking, not sharp enough … Or at least not as much as the aggressiveness of the machine and its impressive fork with radial calipers suggest. Don’t worry, the power is there; it’s just not bad enough.
On her handlebars, it’s the way open to arousal, muscular sensations, to the beast that is in her (or in you?!?). Obviously, on the practical side, that’s not it: zero protection, no storage, exclusivity of the machine and ultra limited duo. Hey! Why not suitcases and a car radio while we’re at it … The Speed is a mouthful and watts? !
