On the outskirts of the English countryside, far from the docks and near the peaceful hovels, one hardly perceives the bustle of the city. We think of something else, of time, of taking it. But the philosophy is not exactly the same with Hinckley. There, in Leicestershire, a critter has recently struck down and only thinks of one thing: the attack. On multiple levels – On the road, facing other machines that have supplanted her in her intrinsic bestiality, perhaps against herself. And that’s probably why the Triumph 1050 Speed Triple has become RS in its high-end definition. This is understandable. More watts and more arguments, it was worth shaking up the habits a bit.
This is how it is. The big English roadster goes to a higher echelon. In its S version, the Speed already says a lot. We therefore expect a marked increase in value for its “premium” definition. So let’s see the potential of the 1050 Speed Triple RS. And it begins with a cavalry of fine dignity. The large 3-cylinder has offered itself more than a hundred new parts to boost its enthusiasm. He wanted energy to spare, and he’s coming out. It rumbles, it sends, it wants to go hunting for the bulk of the gang. And with 150 horsepower, more engine speed and increased liveliness, the English block comes to join the fight with dignity..
For this RS version, Triumph has taken again the good formula released at the beginning of the R: Ohlins and carbon; and now enhanced electronics.
Let’s see the most delicious, the suspensions. The gear chosen is beautiful, efficient, and full of promise. For the fork, it will be a 43mm diameter NIX30 model; the rear will exalt via the TTX36 mono-shock. Both are adjustable in preload, rebound and compression.
Then comes the time to indulge yourself with a diet, the ingredients of which are popular. On this RS, the front fender, radiator scoops and exhaust heat shields are made of carbon fiber. The equipment continues to really mark its difference from the Speed S thanks to the addition of an engine spoiler, a seat cowl, a pair of Arrow mufflers, specific brake and clutch levers and a ‘a new comfort saddle. In addition to the qualitative gain, the benefit on the scale is notable: 3 kilos, which brings this Speed Triple RS down to 189 kilos dry.
Seduced, you will do like everyone else and approach the bike. We can already imagine filing the footrests and sending big watts out of bends. But the machine only obeys its master, and now it recognizes him. Electronically. A keyless start system has taken place on board. You can leave the technical appendix in your pocket and take possession of the Speed. She obeyed by unlocking her steering and ignition.
You took your place on the handlebars. Well. And you can already enjoy the beautiful 5 ‘color TFT screen, just like on the standard Speed. Except that here, we are entitled to 3 additional types of display and a stopwatch. The engine has started, it belches, so do you. Must go. And if the followers of trajectory and reactivity will prefer this RS version, it is because it also embeds an IMU inertial unit. Not a Bosch like on the majority of equipped grinding wheels, but a technology developed with Continental. The box continuously collects roll, pitch, yaw, bank angle and acceleration measurements. The steering aids thus react more finely, with ABS and traction control optimized for cornering: they provide better distribution of braking forces, slip rate and torque for optimum performance in a straight line and in curves. The pilot can also configure them as he wishes thanks to the Track piloting mode, only available on the RS. This is in addition to the Road, Rain, Sport and Rider that we already find on the S. From the latter, we also get the cruise control, backlit controls, the USB socket, optimized speeds, revised anti-dribble clutch, new wheels, heavy Brembo braking, and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires.
There will be very few complaints around the 1050 Speed RS. There are trifles, but all in all very personal, like the non-return of the round optics and the regret of the lightened rims of the first R. And then, as the 765 Street Triple RS outputs more watts than the R, which comes out. -Even more watts than the S, it would have been nice a spoon of canassons and more here too, just to mark the name.
What about the shifter? So, it’s simple, there is an up / down model available but optional. On this point, the manufacturer could have made an effort and put it in series.
Deeply revised, the Speed has remained a Triple although becoming RS. With its quirky double optics, its single-sided arm, its exhausts under the saddle and its thug profile, it defends its idea of design and grumbling. Curious or charmed, the English roadster knows how to provoke reactions. And now, he will provoke new ones among streetfighters who flout his authority. At its beginnings as today, it remains “apart” from the bullies of the road. And that’s why we choose him. Get drunk, the Speed has a big urge to break !
