With the Thruxton, you enter the retro world of sports, the world of the big cafe-racer, the madness of the Joe BAR Team races and the gentlemen of the arsouille. An interpretation … no, a modern transposition of the English cars causing terror in the streets of London.
Its 1200 cc found more vigor, and the Thruxton R’s passion for the sport grew strong enough to make it RS. A symbol exposing certain Triumph motorcycles to life, when adrenaline flows from the forehead to the brakes. 1050 Speed and 765 Street designed it flush with the slider; the Thruxton 1200 RS is imbued with it to refine its playing field.
This bike is not approached as a current sports car, although its soul tends towards performance. It is in no way a Daytona, nor a replacement, nor a missile for the track. With her, no combarde, stopwatch or Alfano. To honor the half-handlebars, it is a black leather jacket, character trajectories and the applause of history that resonates in the helmet. The Thruxton R glided with joy in this ether, with an impeccable kafra suit of stitching; by becoming RS, there are only cosmetic touch-ups on the surface capable of retaining the difference.
Laying its edge depth through, the black undertakes the crankcases, the strapping and the hub of the spoke rims as well as the springs of the shock absorbers.
The evolution in RS allows the in-line twin to recover. Already to pass Euro5, then to take a break with the Speed Twin, a bit annoying power side because moved by the same engine as the standard Thruxton and R. By increasing the compression ratio, then by introducing high compression pistons, a profile of reworked cams, a crankshaft with less inertia and by shifting the red zone by 500 rpm, Triumph found 8 additional horsepower. The English block now sends 105 horsepower at 7,500 revs. This maxi will be fetched 750 trs further than that of the previous R. On the other hand, the unchanged torque of 11.4 mkg is available a little earlier, at 4250 revs. Figures that bring the bike closer to the BMW R NineT Racer.
More watts was not the only area for improvement. The engine touch-ups made it possible to reduce inertia by 20%, for faster revolutions while modifications concerning the clutch, the alternator, the magnesium cylinder head cover, the thinner engine crankcases and the shafts. ‘balancing allowed a reduction in weight. The new battery too, the brake calipers a little bit too. A result of 6 kilos is to be removed from the total mass.
The Thruxton 1200 has spent time in the sports saddle to earn its RS. More potato and less biass. More dynamic, it will also be better calmed (if necessary) by its Brembo M50 jaws. They bite larger discs, 320 mm. Pneumatic riding is also progressing with Metzeler Racetec RRs. The rest of the chassis remains the same from the R model, with its tubular steel double cradle frame, Showa 43mm inverted fork and Ohlins shocks; adjustable from everywhere of course.
Under its retro look, the Thruxton RS has managed to hide its electronic assistance super well. The three Driving Modes (Road – Rain – Sport) have been updated, each modulating in its own way the responsiveness of the throttle grip and the level of traction control. If it swells you, it is disconnectable.
The front and rear headlights are LED, as is the daytime seal. A USB socket will be appreciated by many, especially the telephone. All this will however soon be forgotten by the eye when it appreciates the scent of the double needle counter, the superb polished aluminum tee, and the delicacies boosting the premium side of the Triumph. Difficult not to mark his curiosity in front of the metal strap on the tank, or the imitation Monza cap, the level of finish, and the deliciously selfish configuration of this machine..
But by the way, it comes from where this name, half unpronounceable and spoken like a piece of paper in the mouth … It is a village in Hampshire (England), where a circuit was built on the remains of ‘a former military airport. After a short series of 9 hours Endurance on this track, the 500 Miles of Thruxton saw the light of day in 1958 and Triumph won this first edition with a 650 Bonneville. In 1965 a special version of the Bonneville “Thruxton specification”, the T120 R, was produced. It will be essential for the editions from 1965 to 1969.
This past is now part of the metal of this 1200 RS. We are far from a complete overhaul, Triumph having taken care to keep the essential while improving skills. By simplifying as much as possible, we tapped the engine, reinforced the brakes and lightened the grinding wheel – exactly the same approach as preparing a motorcycle when you have the checkered flag in your eyes.
