It’s a bit big for the Rocket III Touring to travel on the handlebars of a custom. Of course, the machine is as noble as it is statutory, with a huge engine. But something more accessible was missing from the Triumph lineup. The English manufacturer fills this gap with this 1700 Thunderbird LT. For Light Touring. Understand by this that the big British custom equips itself as it should with accessories to travel, without becoming a road vessel like the Electra Glide or the Victory Vision. Her thing is a nostalgic scent and the perfect cruiser kit.
Style, it runs the bike from one end to the other of its 254 cm long. A plethora of chrome, a large windshield and removable leather saddlebags, a sissy bar to complete a dual density saddle more welcoming than that of the standard Thunderbird, an American-style headlight ramp, wide footrests made of aluminum and nice spoke rims surrounded by whitewall tires. Anecdote: Triumph wanted more efficient gommards than those usually fitted on this kind of motorcycles. So he asked Avon to create specific tires; the Thunderbird LT is thus the only machine whose whitewall tires have a radial carcass. A world first.
The LT shares the same base as the Commander, including the large parallel twin in 1699 cm3 version with 94 horsepower and 15.3 mkg to lift a mass of 380 kilos. Beyond the 47 mm fork, the front tire sits the machine on the road: a 150, or 25% wider than on the majority of motorcycles in circulation. With 180 mm, the rear is more conventional. Braking is provided by three 310 mm discs and standard ABS. The transmission is American style: a large belt, ensuring flexibility and almost maintenance free. That’s good, this bike is built for the great outdoors, and its 22-liter tank already allows you to enjoy great stages..
The two-tone paintwork is the most beautiful effect while the bike gives off an oh-so-elegant road feel. With its parallel twin, the Thunderbird 1700 LT sets itself apart from an already targeted competition. Kawasaki VN 1700 Classic Tourer, Harley Softail Heritage or Road King, and Victory Cross Roads Classic trust an unwavering and customary V-twin.
