With its Speed Triple, Triumph lacked the roadster in itself
the equivalent in 600cm3. It was therefore tempting to take back the TT600 –
the sports car of the English brand – to remove the fairing, to give a
torque boost to take out a moving roadster. Bet won
?
Discovery
In
its neon green or orange dress, you can see the Speed Four coming from afar. Of
closer, the inimittable double optics, the side air intakes,
the mini windshield, the bracelets and the absence of a passenger handle
mark as much as the big sister Speed Triple: a real face of
thug, rough stripping, rough at will. In short, she has the profile
mean, uncompromising roadster guy.
By getting closer, we discover the same digital dashboard as the
athletic. When roadsters are often built economically for
offer an attack price, here Triumph offers the TT600 … simply
stripped of its fairing. It therefore retains all the advantages of the hypersport model
– red zone at 14,000 rpm – the extra look !
In the saddle
The
driving position surprises for a roadster. Facing the traditional handlebars
flat, the Speed Four offers bracelets. We are therefore in the same
position that a sportswoman, the body leaning forward, resting on the
cuffs. Suddenly, the roadster is almost like a cafe racer. this
said, like the TT600, the position remains comfortable without ever breaking
the wrists. The saddle is wide and comfortable. In terms of handling
when stationary, the Speed is a real toy. With a featherweight of only
170 kilos, one would even take oneself to appreciate a possible stroller !
The original seat cowl, which prohibits any passenger, can be dismantled by
two screws placed under the saddle using one of the keys from the kit
tools in seconds.
Contact
The lights come on in full, the digital counter is reset
in a quiet whistle. No starter here: injection requires. Clutch,
start-up.
Kickstand folded in (the safety guards it automatically and turns off the engine
in the opposite case), the motorcycle starts on a stream of gas without rushing.
The controls are firm and the gears change automatically (on
just notice a difficulty in finding neutral, hot engine).
The driving position and the bare character quickly make you want
to turn the handle, especially since the couple is present everywhere.
We wondered that she would be the counterpart of the ten horses kidnapped
on the power of the original sports car … They are there, in the couple
at low speed! Suddenly, and unlike the majority of the four legs
who have trouble making themselves heard under 7,000 revolutions, the Speed pushes
immediately from the lowest revs. And like the driving position
is clearly on the front, the bike does not give the impression of planing
at the slightest acceleration. In short, we immediately feel confident.
On the road, the gears simply shift one behind the other…
but you have to think about it, so the Speed accepts all regimes at all
The floors. And we always want to stay on intermediate gears
to play with the thoroughbred and multiply the sensations even more. this
said, even in fifth, the Speed Four picks up sharply from
3,000 turns.
Road
The
city driving is a real pleasure. While the position of
driving could have made one think that driving would transform quickly
in Calvary, it is not. Precise, always available, the Speed
Oven is always placed well and responds to the finger and the eye, both at start-up
than braking, than passing between the waves of cars. The duo do
change nothing in this state of affairs; you never feel the sandbag of any
manner.
On the motorway, at 6,000 laps and 130 km / h, (and at 8,000 laps in the
red!) the bike always asks for more. The seemingly tiny windshield,
plays the card of efficiency for a minimum footprint. In short,
it is possible to climb up to 150 km / h without suffering, either
between 20 and 30 km / h more than normal. After, the position
dab and neck muscle training becomes necessary, but
it is not really the vocation of the monster.
Back on national, we resume playing and chaining the virolos
brought together with disconcerting ease. Here one can even practically
do not need to play with the selector so the Speed pushes everywhere,
for the pilot’s greatest pleasure, even on Sundays. And when we go up
in the towers, we have the impression that it will never stop …
cycle does not spoil anything since it is quite simply flawless, what
whatever the conditions: worthy heritage of the sportswoman.
Like the TT600, the Speed Four retains qualities
precision. Suddenly, it is placed without surprise and allows
even approximate trajectories without any worries. She put
so confident that we find ourselves constantly attacking,
without any ulterior motives and without realizing it, y
included in town. In short, it constantly pushes for crime.
Comfort
The
Speed Four has a large, soft saddle. Sports settings
can soften for roadster comfort … much better than that
of its sister Speed Triple and largely at the same level as the roadsters
Japanese.
In fact, it even turns out to be comfortable to allow
courses of 200 kilometers without stopping and without any
pain.
Braking
Nothing has changed compared to the TT 600: same braking
and the same efficiency as an excellent sports car. Braking
is therefore safe and powerful. Even the rear brake is sufficient,
while the front brake, with four-piston calipers, offers excellent
biting without ever surprising. It thus authorizes to take the brakes
without measure and does not require a skilful dosage to brake short and sure.
The motorcycle does not dive, even on strong braking … which will be
on the other hand, less appreciated by the passenger who
will slide happily on the saddle.
Convenient
the
tank is made of metal and allows the use of magnetic bags
relatively bulky without obstructing the view or the driving position.
The tool kit is attached directly under the saddle,
like the maintenance booklet: ingenious. That’s all you
put below, except for a small lock (the Abus Shark – approved
insurance and FFMC – pass).
Consumption
As much as the TT600 drives in GT on the torque, the Speed Four encourages
to stay in the towers and tickle the handle
permanently. The type of driving has nothing to do with it and leads to
significantly higher consumption. The passage in reserve
is carried out here from 190 km (i.e. a consumption of seven liters
to the hundred).
Conclusion
The
Speed Four turns out to be a real weapon pushing for crime, terrible. It’s necessary
forget about the traditional roadster references. The Speed Four has nothing
to have. In fact, she’s to the Bandit 600, what a Diversion is to a
Bandit! Does that give you any idea of the gap? We said the Bandit pushes
to crime? In comparison, the Bandit is a docile beginner’s bike.
This also explains the repeated successes of the Speed in the Roadster Cup….
power and torque put the Speed Four in front of everyone…
including at the price level. Because at 8,950 euros, she’s two thousand euros
more expensive than a Bandit or a Fazer and at the same price as a ZX-6R! Hard
back to financial reality! And that’s a shame, because the Speed Four
is really a raodster that will give you sensations that you will not have
with no other roadster.
(note: March 2004: its price was lowered below
8,000 euros since its launch, and this new price is reviving the debate)
In short, the Speed Four is not for everyone
and will be reserved for wrist fades (provided with a voucher
budget) who want to find a motorcycle that is both powerful and
player for any occasion.
