The Chinese Shineray group owned the Italian motorcycle manufacturer in 2014 SWM accepted. New engines for new models have now been presented at a presentation in China to mark the company’s 20th anniversary. The new engine family relies on two cylinders that are arranged in a V shape. The displacement marks mentioned were 350, 550, 850 and 1200 cubic centimeters. Performance data or other technical features were not mentioned. The new engines will be used in models ranging from entry-level bikes to large sports or naked bikes. Some observers see SWM competing in the Superbike World Championship with it. SWM currently uses single-cylinder units from Husqvarna and Shineray for its models.

The sample engine shown at the presentation was similar to this Bialbero 1200 CorsaCorta-V2 from Moto Morini.

The sample engine shown at the presentation caused confusion. Marked with the lettering of Shineray and SWM, the V2 looked like a deja-vu, because it resembled the 1.2 liter V2 from Moto Morini like a twin brother. Speculations quickly made the rounds that Moto Morini would supply SWM with engines in the future.

Then came Moto Morini’s denial. The Chinese have a Bialbero 1200 CorsaCorta-V2 Moto Morini bought – but only one engine. However, there is no agreement on engine deliveries to SWM. There is also no speculation about a possible joint engine development. Moto Morini emphasized in his statement that it was still open to possible collaborations.

SWM comeback 2014 with help from China

SWM was founded in 1971 in Milan by Piero Sironi and Fausto Vergani. The model program included trial motorcycles, enduros and cross machines that were powered by Sachs and Rotax engines. In 1984 it was discontinued to be revived in 2014 with capital from Shinarey. The restart was technically supported by Ampelio Macchi, who has worked at Cagiva, Aprilia and Husqvarna, among others.
