Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS: Almost everything new
Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS (2021)
Triple on speed with 180 hp
Triumph goes all out with the new Speed Triple and increases the displacement from 1,050 to 1,160 cubic meters after 16 years. There is also a new chassis, a new design and the latest in technology.
Jens Kratschmar
01/26/2021
Since 2005, the displacement of the Triumph Speed Triple with 1,050 cubic has almost been a cultural constant. Not really weak in terms of performance with 150 hp at the end, but always with the red power lamp compared to the passengers with more than 200 hp last. In terms of design and optics, too, the history of the Speedy was always bigger than its future. That is all over now.
Triumph Motorcycles
Motor bigger and stronger
Triumph really leaves no stone unturned with the new Speed Triple 1200 RS. Except for the number of cylinders and the firing order (1, 2, 3), the new engine has nothing in common with the well-known and proven 1050. In figures: 1,160 cubic meters from a short 60.8 millimeter stroke (-10.6 mm) and a strong 90 millimeter bore (+ 11 mm) with a high compression of 13.2: 1, result in 180 hp (+30 hp) at 10,750 / min (+ 250 / min) and 125 Nm (+ 8 Nm) at 9,000 / min (+ 1,850 / min). In addition, the new motor turns a maximum of 650 rpm higher than the 1050, which is also thanks to the new valve drive with rocker arms. The figures clearly show that Triumph with the new Speed Triple 1200 RS is about to move up to the top nude league Aprilia Tuono V4, KTM 1290 Super Duke R., BMW S 1000 R., Ducati Streetfighter V4, MV Agusta Brutale 1000, Yamaha MT-10 and Kawasaki ZH2 not only packs, but also wants to play in the front.
As already suspected, Triumph designed the new engine with superimposed transmission shafts, which made the entire unit shorter. This creates space for a new, longer single-sided swing arm. In the larger space between the engine and the swing arm, the previously vertical Ohlins TTX 36 strut of the 1050 RS can be replaced with a shorter, inclined model. The smaller deflection creates space for another speed volution – the new exhaust system.
Triumph Motorcycles
With the catalytic converter and front silencer, this is mostly under the engine and a single flap-controlled muffler hangs on the side next to the rim – which should also please the accessories industry. The front silencer and the manifold are almost completely surrounded by a beautifully drawn standard spoiler made of GRP and aluminum. The almost traditional, raised double pots of the 1050s at the rear were unfortunately always a point of criticism in terms of weight and weight distribution. This new centralization of the masses probably brings the Speedy 1200 RS a welcome shift of the center of gravity downwards and forwards, which is also immediately noticeable when maneuvering for the first time. Where the old RS still works a bit in the rear and the additional weight has to be felt at the back, the new, light rear of the 1200s swings easily and fluffy.
Ready to drive under 200 kilograms
The new 1200 has become a full 10 kilograms lighter and weighs 198 kilograms when ready to drive. Compared to the competition extremely competitive, all of them – with the exception of Yamaha and Kawa – are ready to drive around 200 kilograms. The new engine alone saves seven kilos. Although the cubic capacity has increased by a good 10 percent, its dimensions in the frame hardly make it appear larger than the old 1050 and the omission of the oil cooler also saves weight. The only thing that is noticeable at first glance is the slightly wider cylinder head. The new lithium battery also makes a big contribution to weight loss, saving another 2.3 kilograms.
Chassis lighter, sharper and more stable
A TTX-36 strut from Ohlins still works in the new, longer single-sided swing arm (+ 74 mm to 595 mm), but now with 120 millimeters of travel (-10 mm). At the front, Triumph continues to use an Ohlins fork with the NIX 30 damper cartridges with separate damping for compression and rebound and an adjustable spring preload per fork leg with 120 millimeters of spring travel. Braking power comes again from Brembo, at the front with the latest Stylema saddles, which are animated by the MCS pump from Brembo with adjustable responsiveness to bite into the 320 discs. At the rear, Triumph has significantly reduced the diameter of the brake disc from 255 to 220 millimeters. Chassis data: constant wheelbase of 1,445 centimeters and simultaneous extension of the caster to a stable 104.7 millimeters (+ 13.4 mm) promise a high level of stability when accelerating out of an inclined position and when braking into it. The steering head angle has been set steeper to 23.9 degrees to maintain the wheelbase and the rear is set slightly higher, which could explain the increase in seat height by five to 830 millimeters. This is almost proven by the first seat test, as the well-known, slightly rear-heavy feeling of the 1050 RS is no longer present even when the 1200 is standing. A semi-active chassis is deliberately omitted for weight reasons and the customer surveys on which the model is based probably also indicated that the typical Speed Triple customer does not value it.
Triumph Motorcycles
When it comes to tire selection, Triumph says what you expect from the new Speed Triple 1200 RS. With the standard semi-slick Metzeler Racetec RR in the K3 compound on the new, lighter cast aluminum rims, trips to and on track days are welcome, but vacation trips with unsteady weather can inadvertently become eventful with such sharp slippers. Dimensions: 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 190/55 ZR 17 at the rear. Optionally, no less sharp Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC02 can be mounted. Triumph has homologated both types. From a purely legal point of view, all other radial tire models can also be fitted in the dimensions mentioned. It’s basically the same as the chassis and the electronic helpers. A tire pressure monitoring system can be ordered as an option.
More optics, technology and design
The double headlights, which have been more and more pleasing and aggressive since 2010, have finally become razor-sharp LED eyes with dominant daytime running lights in the new Speed Triple 1200 RS. The new, also lighter frame (-17%), the engine, the new, narrower rear frame made of cast aluminum with a very slim hump also require a new tank shape, which is now a bit longer and slimmer towards the seat. The strong sidecut of the old RS is completely eliminated, the times of the “Chubby tails” are over. The seat test with a height of 1.87 meters results in a sporty, comfortable sitting posture with good knee closure and even contact with the motorcycle. In general, the clearly aggressive design is clearly aimed at the racetrack from the country club, it is still clearly a speed triple, but the gentleman has swapped the tweet jacket for the racing suit. In stark contrast to the design of the engine.
Triumph Motorcycles
You read that correctly: Triumph mixes the teams of engine engineers with the designers, and that’s how engines come out where no cables, hoses, connections or other constructions can confuse the view. With the new 1200, everything looks extremely stylish, clean and elegant. A new TFT display with two different displays, a lap timer, five driving modes, one of which is freely configurable. The full range of active, banking-dependent safety systems is adapted to these modes in their control threshold. The new MIB Evo system from Continental includes cornering ABS, lean angle sensitive traction control, wheelie control and a controlled engine brake adapted to the mappings. Furthermore, a quickshifter with blipper is standard on board. And the My Triumph Connectivity System is also installed ex works. The smartphone can be connected via the app and the motorcycle can be used as a Bluetooth hub for communication systems or as a cloned display for the navigation system.

Prices, colors, availability
Triumph is offering the new Speed Triple 1200 RS in the colors Sapphire Black and Matt Silver Ice in Germany for 17,500 euros plus additional costs. There will be no economy version with an R or S. Dealers are already taking orders, the new one should be available from mid-March.
Conclusion
Triumph (finally) plays the long negative “Game of Power” with. 180 hp, 198 kilos of weight and top components at a really good price are an announcement. In terms of chassis and brakes in particular, no one can match it in terms of price-performance and the new engine is crying out for new models with good names like Sprint RS as a real sports tourer or Tiger RS as a heavy crossover beating.
