Long-distance Sport-GT

Triumph Sprint ST 955iThe
Sprint ST is one of those road cars with a zest
sporty, allowing long journeys to be combined with thrills
day by day. And compared to the competition rather situated
around 750 cm3, Triumph offers a 955 cm3 equipped with the famous three
legs, rich in character. Four-day, 1,400-kilometer test
through Auvergne.

Discovery

In its gray livery, the Sprint ST is particularly
sober. We are immediately struck by the apparent length of
the motorbike. Triumph Sprint ST 955ithe
single-sided is superb and showcases curved stick wheels
Of the nicest effect. We are then "hypnotized" by the
two almond eyes surmounted by a third eye, a little
like the Suzuki GSX-F. The bubble appears wide and the fairing
encompassing, allowing immense gills to pierce. The whole is rewarding
and could suggest a larger displacement,
if it weren’t for a discreet 955 affixed to the back.

In the saddle

Sitting, the feet touch the ground easily for the standard pilot of
1.70m. The bust falls forward to take hold of the half-handlebars but
is not as extreme as on a sports car.

Under the eyes, a meter graduated up to 280 km / h, a
tachometer with a red zone at 12,000 rpm, a gauge at
gasoline, oil temperature, topped with witnesses
neutral, injection, oil, shifting in reserve, indicators
and full headlight. Almost hidden in the right corner, the digital clock.
It is also the only digital element on the motorcycle. Corn
otherwise, everything is there and very clear. We will simply regret the trip
unique.

The rectangular mirrors are easily adjusted and
offer a wide field of vision.

Low, it jumps particularly easily for the passenger;
it is also undoubtedly one of the lowest for the passenger. At
day by day, the passenger particularly appreciates.

Contact

The three-legged awakens in a dull, discreet growl
reassuring.

Triumph Sprint ST 955iClutch,
start … The bike appears a bit heavy or rather
the half-handlebars interfere a little for the grip. The feet
are found particularly raised upwards, and
one has the impression of being on a horse. The bust lies slightly
leaning forward, without however bringing to a position in
support on the wrists like a sportswoman. Knees stick to the tank
curved.

We find the sensations of the three legs, already experienced
on the Speed triple or the Daytona 955: a torque present from
the 3,000 revolutions, a living engine whatever the revs, ideally
located between the traction of a twin and the extension of a four-cylinder.
The sound, similar to a turbine, constantly accompanies the movements
right wrist.

The first one turns out to be very long, like
the second, moreover. Without making the engine howl, it is possible to
stay in town on the first two gears having already
exceeded the authorized speeds. The start-ups
are then vigorous and the thrust continues.

City

Triumph Sprint ST 955iAnd
well apart from the three thousand turns, with
very frank pushes … so frank besides that we
is easily found at 80 km / h without seeing anything coming. Engine
does not roar at any time and completely makes you forget the
speed. The first kilometers will be in Parisian traffic jams
and put a strain on the left wrist: the clutch
is hard, very hard, and it’s a real session
wrist weight training than driving around town. And as long as he
get a little hot, the engine heats up very quickly … heat that
you immediately feel under the right knee attached to the frame
and under the buttocks. In short, she doesn’t really like low revs
and traffic jams in June.

Highway

Leaving Paris, direction Clermont-Ferrand, the Sprint ST sets off
like a long-distance runner for long kilometers. At 3000 rpm,
it purrs at 90 km / h and at 5,000 rpm titillates the 140
km / h. At this speed, we do not feel the wind … at worst we can hear it noticeably.
And the motorcycle continues to climb in the towers … At 160 km / h, it
is only 5700 rpm, very far from the red zone located
at 9500 rpm. The meter offers a realistic 280 km / h.
In fact, with the original bubble, very wide and encompassing, it
is possible to ride quietly, bust raised, at 160-170
km / h without suffering from the wind at all, whether solo or duo. Beyond,
while the license is already lost for a few years,
you can take shelter behind the bubble.

Triumph Sprint ST 955iDepartmental

Back on departmental roads, the Sprint finds relatively easily
its marks without having the liveliness of a roadster. As a duo, she
will even be a bit heavy to put on the corner. As many
motorcycles ride even with a bad posture, such as arms
slightly stretched, the Sprint requires you to have your arms
very well flexed. In short, she gives lessons.

If it doesn’t like being under 2500 rpm on high gears,
it begins to respond from 3000 rpm.

Comfort

The saddle, long and padded, is very
comfortable, for the pilot as for the passenger. Settled
original a little dry, the bike never jumps, even on
deformed coating. If the passenger is as usual
less well off, it is however possible to take steps
200 km / h.

Triumph Sprint ST 955iBraking

Braking is perfectly homogeneous with the machine. The back
is very difficult to block in dry conditions. The front reveals itself
firm and requires vigor to bite. In the end, we are not
never surprised while having excellent braking.

Night road

This is undoubtedly the weak point of the bike. Certainly it is possible to
driving at night, but then at very reduced speed,
and even in full headlight, the result is not really convincing.
The origin is due to the use of a single lighthouse on both,
these would deserve to be coupled with a
relay to light together.

Convenient

Triumph Sprint ST 955iThe
saddle opens to discover a tool kit and what
place an anti-theft device, even long and wide, such as France Anti-theft, the rear
being pierced to allow passage.

The passenger handle is central. She leaves room for
hang on well.

The large tank is unfortunately made of plastic, despite
its exterior appearance. So you will forget the magnetic bag
for a suitable mat.

In fact, the ideal is to choose the specific suitcases
Triumph, which integrate particularly well with
the line of the motorcycle, without overloading it. The icing on the cake, it
it is possible to have the same key for all the locks 🙂 Too bad
simply, that they are not understood from the start,
so much does their installation seem obvious for a motorcycle
perfect for long journeys.

Small tip: it seems that the removal of the wedge in the handle
acceleration associated with a recalibration
of the injection computer to its original value make it possible to
give a little more verve to the ST.

Consumption

Triumph Sprint ST 955iWith
six liters per hundred on average, the injection still works miracles here.
The Sprint ST can therefore quietly go on 300 kilometers
for long crossings and confirms its reputation as
GT, with a passage in reserve around 280 km. She will start
to consume more from 170 km / h, heading where
it spends 7 liters / cent. It will climb to 9 liters beyond
an average of 200 km / h. But even with muscular use
within passes and winding roads, it will remain around 7.5
liters per hundred.

It will simply be necessary to trust the gauge which remains fixed
at most the first hundred kilometers to fall halfway
suddenly around 150 km, to reach the red zone from the 220
km … while the reserve indicator light does not come on
only 280 km away.

Conclusion

Triumph Sprint ST 955iAfter
five days, I got to know her. Comfortable, rewarding,
the Sprint ST is the bike with which it is good to go far. This is
a GT. And yet, if we want to have sensations in accelerations,
it is always responsive and offers a wide range of use
which could be distributed 70% in GT and 30% in sport.
It is clearly a motorcycle that can be learned but that we appreciate
on distance and duration.

Strong points

User perspective
Triumph Sprint ST 955iLaurent

"Thunder, ZERO problems in 7,500 kms … coupled injection
with three torquey legs, the single-sided swingarm, the fairing, the
braking … in short, a living machine with flawless heading. "
