Triumph Trident 660: New three-cylinder roadster

Triumph Trident 660

With 81 hp from 7,343 euros for beginners and intermediates

Triumph wants to stir up the mid-range roadster segment – with the new Trident 660, which will be launched on the market at the end of January 2021 at a price of 7,343 euros.

Gslightly in advance. Even if the three-cylinder engine in a mid-range Triumph naked bike has already been proven by the Street Triple family, the Trident 660 is a completely new approach from the British. The mid-range roadster was completely redesigned and its three-cylinder heart also has little to do with its brothers in the group. It all has to do with the targeted audience. The Trident 660 lines up well below the Street Triple and looks to buyers who would otherwise go for a Honda CB 650 R, Yamaha MT-07 and Kawasaki Z 650.

Triumph Trident Launch Event

You can find all the information about the new Triumph Trident from October 30th after the live stream on Triumph directly at 81 hp in the top and A2 variant

Accordingly, the 660 cm³ three-cylinder, which hangs in a new tubular steel perimeter frame, only delivers 81 hp at 10,250 turns. The maximum torque is 64 Nm, which is already available at 6,250 rpm. Over 90 percent of the maximum torque is available over most of the speed range. Trident drivers benefit from a powerful and linear power and torque output. Triumph offers beginners an A2 throttle variant with 47.8 hp at 8,750 rpm and 51 Nm at 5,250 tours. It is throttled by software and a new throttle grip. The British are proud of the 16,000 km maintenance intervals, which are well above the competition. The maintenance costs are accordingly around 25 percent below the competition.

Because the triple on one "Ride-by-wire"-Control of the throttle valve sets, the driving modes Road and Rain are also on board. In addition, traction control and ABS can be switched off – but without a curve function. The six-speed gearbox works together with a torque-assisted anti-hopping clutch. A quickshifter is available at an additional cost.

New steel frame

The Showa USD fork with 120 millimeters of spring deflection has absolutely no adjustment options, the rear central spring strut with 133.5 millimeters of spring deflection, which is supported by a deflection on the steel swing arm, can only be adjusted using spring preload. The discs of the front brake system measure 310 millimeters, and the double-piston calipers are axially hinged in the classic way. Behind supports a single 255 disk. For the first tires, Triumph uses Michelin Road 5 tires in dimensions 120/70 at the front and 180/55 at the rear on 17-inch cast rims. When ready to drive, the Trident 660 weighs 189 kilograms. The seat height of just 805 millimeters is also suitable for those who are shorter.

LED lights and connectivity

The multifunctional TFT color display with integrated LCD display is adapted to the needs of today’s bikers. With an optional connectivity accessory module, arrow navigation, GoPro control as well as telephone and music control are possible via a Bluetooth connection. The display is controlled via buttons on the left handlebar fitting. The round 7-inch headlight uses LED technology, as does the integrated taillight and the self-deactivating indicators. For a surcharge, they also deliver a running light staging. In order to keep the rear clean, the license plate and the rear indicators sit on a swing arm. The 14 liter tank is characterized by strong knee indentations.

Lots of accessories

Those who want to further individualize can choose from a pool of 45 accessories. The Trident accessory program includes frame protectors, a "Fly screen"-Cockpit cover in vehicle color, aluminum handlebar end mirror, heated grips, a shift assistant and several luggage options.

Low price, low maintenance

Triumph has four color variants available for the new Trident 660: Matt Jet Black & Matt Silver Ice, Crystal White, Sapphire Black and Silver Ice & Diablo Black. The British call for a base price of 7,343 euros (16% VAT) plus ancillary delivery costs. The targeted competitors are between 6,800 euros (Kawasaki) and 7,480 euros (Honda). Like almost all other Triumph models, the new Trident is manufactured in Thailand. In Germany, the Trident comes with a 2 + 2 year guarantee with unlimited mileage. The Triumph strategists do not expect a cannibalization effect on the Street Triple. And currently marks the entry into the Triumph world with a base price of 8,450 euros.

Conclusion

Triumph brings a classically designed roadster for the middle class, which is primarily intended to appeal to beginners. 81 PS and 64 Nm are enough for the target group and make the Trident A2-compatible. The price of 7,343 euros is fully on par with the class.
