Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde

Triumph TT 600August
2002

The TT 600 is the first sports car created by Triumph
in 2000 in the 600cc sports category … We could have
believe that it is also a "three legs" but,
no, Triumph has embarked on the creation of a new
motorcycle and a new engine … 4 cylinders with electronic injection…
and wiped the plaster with the first models … the
performances were not there.

For the 2002 vintage, the English brand took over the engine
from A to Z with the ambition to position it in the same niche
than the CBR 600. It took a test to see if the bet was
or not won.

The first thing that strikes you when you see the TT 600 .. is
his discretion. Like the Daytona, Triumph has chosen
dresses in solid colors: black and gray. This radically changes
decorations of the competitors. When we approach, we especially notice
the two front air inlets arranged on either side
of the fairing and the screen which is similar to a high screen.
For the rest, it is a sporty 600 cm3 classic: fairing
integral, handlebars bracelets, wide saddle. The meter is a classic
Triumph: a voluminous tachometer with a red zone at 14,000
revolutions, displaying the oil temperature and oil + injection warning lights,
completed by a digital display for the speedometer,
the distance recorder, the two trips and the clock. We regret
just the absence of gasoline gauge … especially that the passage in
reserve is automatic and simply signaled by a witness
yellow on the meter. The best remains for the end: the TT600 has
injection, a first for the production of 600 cc sports cars.

In the saddle

The first good surprise comes from the driving position. Despite
bracelets, the weight of the body does not rest on the wrists which
are not broken from the first few minutes. the
bust is little leaning forward for the sport category.
The footrests provide a perfect triangle and are a guarantee of comfort
over the distance. The saddle turns out to be wide and particularly
comfortable.

Contact

The lights come on in full, the digital counter is
reset. No starter of course: injection requires. Clutch,
start-up. Folded kickstand (safety
automatically keeps watch and turns off the engine if not),
the motorbike snorts slowly and leaves on a trickle of gas.

On the road, the gears shift one behind the other
simply. The gearbox is precise on all gears and is discreet,
including on the first gear, unlike the Daytona which
punctuated each passage in first with a sonorous ‘klonk’. In
fact, the bike gives you confidence from the first turns of the wheels
It is taken in hand with disconcerting ease and
quickly allows more muscular driving. You just have to do
pay attention to the first reports, close together, which would
Or go for a wheelie on a too vigorous flick of the wrist.

Road

Triumph TT 600The
city driving is … comfortable: a shame and
an exception for a sportswoman. This is due to the driving position
very little support on the wrists. Available from 3000
laps, the bike turns out to be playful and climbs without complaining
in the towers, without ever seeming to run out of steam … whether you are alone
or in duo.

On the motorway, at 6000 revolutions and 130 km / h, (and at 8000 revolutions
of the red zone!) the motorcycle keeps its cruising speed quietly
and seems terribly bored. If we keep a "straight" bust,
the leather jacket starts flapping in the wind from 140 km / h.
Because if the high screen provides excellent protection for the bust
and the head, it protects little in width … in position
high bust. Then it’s time to get your head stuck in the bubble
to remove any turbulence and make the needle climb
the meter in all "peace of mind".

Back on national, we feel that the TT600 finally finds its middle of
predilection. With a large torque even at the bottom,
it allows to link departmental, entrances
and exit from villages on the high raports without playing the selector
in quiet driving. She’s just waiting for a signal and a teasing foot
the selector to start the turbine and go up in the towers. Yes
the TT600 grazes easily under 2000 rpm, it takes its ease
and push hard with a good kick in the ass from 3000 laps without
never stop with a new landing / thrust in the vicinity
of 9000 rpm. Accelerations and decelerations
are still straightforward and crisp and require control
continuous at these high speeds while we are still
5000 laps from the red zone! She accepts without reluctance to continue
to climb regardless of the gear engaged, but it is
then the pilot who tires … soundproof headphones required for
martyred ears.

Lightweight, precise, it fits without surprise and
allows approximate trajectories without problem. She put
so confident that we find ourselves attacking too much, quickly.
In fact, the TT600 is easy to drive, without the need for piloting
sharp. What she gains in versatility, she just loses a little in
precision.

In fact, the TT600 can behave like a GT, on torque, with
impeccable comfort including duo. The covers from the bottom
diets still allow you to have fun. And for the wipers
handle, she climbs briskly in the towers with a
red area that is difficult to reach because it seems to have
always margin.

Comfort

Triumph TT 600This is
a sportswoman … hard-tuned … What is gained in
behavior level is a little lost at the flexibility level. But the TT600
Passes the test of highways and national roads without hindrance. She
will begin to show its limits on departmental a
slightly stoned, or the pilot risks turning into a yoyo
on the saddle when jumping over moguls: solid support on the footrests
and footwork strongly recommended to maintain a healthy back
state. However, it ranks first in terms of comfort in the
sports category 600 cm3 and would even show
some roadsters (like the Speed Triple in particular).

In fact, it is even so comfortable that it allows
long road / motorway journeys without stopover other than filling
of the tank. A Paris-Vannes in one go is thus possible,
with just a five-minute stopover for a refuel.

Braking

Braking is up to the rest of the machine: powerful.
If the rear brake is a decent retarder, nothing more,
the front brake, with four-piston calipers, offers excellent
biting without ever surprising. It thus authorizes to take the
brakes without measurement and does not require a skilful dosage to brake short
and on. And the icing on the cake, the motorcycle keeps its plate in
any circumstance, without diving on supported braking.

Triumph TT 600Convenient

The tank is made of metal … allowing the use of
relatively large magnetic saddlebags without getting in the way
the sight, nor the driving position (high). On the other hand, any satchel
will prohibit trapping the head behind the bubble, reducing
use of the motorcycle at legal speeds on motorways.

The tool kit is attached directly under the saddle,
like the maintenance booklet: ingenious. That’s all you
put below, except for a small lock (the Abus Shark – approved
insurance and FFMC – pass).

Consumption

It’s a 600 and a 600 who like to look for themselves in the towers. Therefore,
consumption takes a hit, especially compared to its large
sister the Daytona. That said, in GT use during the test and at
speed stabilized on the motorway, it is not placed in reserve
that after 250 km and stopped at the pump
by passing the barrier of 300 km of autonomy! There is no
say, the injection is effective! Now in sportier use
and when the selector plays, it will signal the passage in reserve
from 190 km, then revealing a greater thirst
with a consumption exceeding eight-nine liters per hundred.

Conclusion

Triumph TT 600The
TT600 proves to be the easiest sports car
at the grip level. On a daily basis, it allows a use
in town, an extremely rare thing for this type of machine. She does not
don’t be reluctant to go for miles and Paris-Vannes can
be carried out by the national road in less time than it takes for the
say while keeping a pilot fresh and available on arrival.
In short, it looks like a hypersportive, it can be driven
like a super sports car … but it easily turns into a sporty GT…

The TT600 is thus an excellent second motorcycle, after the joys
of a roadster for example, to taste the pleasure of a versatile sports car
without desiring the disadvantages.
