Triumph 1200 TROPHY 2013

Menus

10 years. A decade since the Trophy was absent from the Triumph catalog. In the Grand Tourism sector, only the Rocket III Touring could defend the bastion. But this juggernaut was more intended for highways and cruising, an interesting competitor of the Harley Electra Glide and Victory Cross Road.
It is therefore with great pleasure that the return of an iconic Hinckley roadster: the Trophy is welcomed. And in 10 years, the bike has had time to embrace the latest trends in style, technology, electronics, and fashion. But does she wink at her grandmother ?
From 1996 to 2003, the Trophy (900 or 1200) was a majestic motorcycle, full of curves and stylistic voluptuousness. A true English lady, with generous shapes and an extraordinarily British silhouette.

The 2013 Trophy ignores this past and is inspired by the German competition and benchmark. The detractors had shouted at the copy when Triumph presented the 1200 Tiger Explorer … They will howl at plagiarism with this 1200 Trophy, a true clone of the BMW R 1200 RT. Same look, same type of integrated mirrors with inlaid turn signals, same angular design, same rear part, and let’s not speak of the single-sided arm. We would even see an engine spoiler inspired by the K 1600 GT. OK, as a whole, the bike lacks neither class nor presence; except that this feeling of dejà vu is omnipresent. Two twin sisters, born to different families.

Evolution of the Trophy in 10 years

Let us stop the criticism on its form and concentrate on the substance. Because the English brand will play with its master card: its 3 cylinders. The block inserted in a new aluminum frame is none other than the large 1215 cm3 of the trail Explorer. Slightly revised, it announces a little less maximum power, 134 horsepower, but available at a lower speed (8,900 rpm). A generous torque of 12.2 mkg will ensure good muscle availability. Much more charming than a 4-cylinder and smoother than a twin, the triple has no shortage of arguments. And many people praise the services of the big twelve-cent in the big trail-GT of the brand.

Trophy engine With this big mill, no problem getting the 301 kilos (full weight) of the 1200 Trophy off the ground. A weight certainly significant, which places it in the heavyweights of the category: only the Kawasaki 1400 GTR (304 kg) and Honda ST 1300 Pan-European (324 kg) outclass it on the scale – in contrast, an R 1200 RT tops out at 259 kg; or one less fridge at mass level.
They put lead in the saddlebags?!? No, just a plethora of equipment. On board the 1200 Trophy, the pilot falls under the trap of comfort: saddle adjustable in height to 20 mm, cruise-control, ABS and coupled braking, electrically adjustable bubble screen with memory, disconnectable traction control, ride-by-accelerator. wire, coded key, side cases with a capacity of 31 liters each, small waterproof glove box in the fairing return with 12V socket, plus a whole series of trinkets. And the list goes on with the SE version described below.
Some details on certain equipment:
/ The electric bubble: it memorizes the position. Switch off the ignition: it returns to the basic position; start, and it takes the place previously set
/ Luggage storage with dynamic system. The cases have an internal movement system to isolate the contents from the vibrations of the motorcycle. This also allows less influence on the stability of the chassis..

the Trophy 1200 2013

This chassis, precisely, what does it offer? Well, classic, tried and tested, whatever it takes to make an efficient and safe GT. The frame is a perimeter aluminum structure, extended by an inverted WP fork at the front, and terminated at the stern with a single-sided gimbal. Three discs provide the braking: two at the front of 320 mm clamped by traditional 4-piston calipers, a 282 at the rear with a double-piston caliper – the coupling ensures braking from the front when requested the back. 26 liters of fuel can be found in the tank. And if the dynamic behavior has been the subject of major attention, dethroning the exceptional efficiency of the RT reference would not be easy – to be confirmed on the road.

With its new 1200 Trophy, Triumph wants to mark a hyper-selective segment, where customers have higher demands. She has what it takes to please, and playing her at the price level, her engine and gear should shake up the market a little..

Duo in Triumph Trophy 1200 2013

In the Triumph catalog, a number of models are doubled by a more richly equipped SE version. The 1200 Trophy is also supported by a premium version, with even more refined equipment. For a few dollars more, the Trophy S.E. offers electronically controlled suspension – the trigger is adjustable to 3 positions (sport / normal / comfort) at the front and rear; the damper also benefits from a 3-mode preload (pilot, pilot + luggage, pilot and passenger).
An on-board Bluetooth audio system with speed-controlled volume, an MP3 / iPod – iPhone compatible USB port, a tire pressure indicator, a heated saddle and an additional 12V socket complete the equipment. The SE is exchanged for 18,870 euros, or almost 1,600 euros more..
