The front door for the Classics has changed for Triumph. The Bonneville having gained cachet and more upscale pretensions with its increased displacement (1200 cm3), it is this new Street Twin which welcomes bikers concerned with classicism. And of English charm; this revisited Bonnie does not lack either aplomb or technology, with a rebel-chic side that suits it well.
The Classic range marks a break with the revival aspect of the previous generation. The Street Twin plays the frivolous youthful role. The look is modeled on the Bonneville but finely refreshed; almost to give him another adolescence. It’s old school and swag at the same time. What could be more vintage than this rear light … in which hides a circle of red LED light. Here, no bargraph and touch screen tablet as an instrument panel. Just a good big counter with blue lighting … with a big needle and as much information as a Windows could display: ABS and traction control status, gear engaged, interval indicator maintenance, consumption, autonomy, fuel gauge, double trip, clock; and tire pressure monitoring and / or heated grip operation if you have taken these options. All the menus and parameters are controlled from the handlebars. And as the Street Twin suspects that you always have your phone with you, its equipment includes a USB socket..
The name Street Twin must have made you tilt already. Among the little bubbling moths, Hinckley unleashed real terror with his Street Triple. The manufacturer wants to mark the street with a different mark but just as much mischief. To fulfill its mission, the bike could not be satisfied with the twin 865 cm3 of the ex-Bonneville, Scrambler and Thruxton. Triumph thus offers it a more evolved version of the parallel twin. Inflated to 900 cm3 and now provided with water cooling, the mill retains its very authentic aesthetic but takes a big step forward in terms of performance. This English block claims 18% additional torque, or 8.2 mkg at 3200 rpm. The ecologists will also be delighted: less polluting emissions and 36% less consumption.
Triumph did not insist so much on the power of this block, which stands at 55 horsepower. A value in line with the category, that amateurs will not judge by numbers but by emotion. The main thing, the spirit of this Street Twin is not there. It is in the feeling, the character. We can bet that this improved mill will offer more pep and emotions than the 865. And it could not be otherwise with descendants who are slightly more sassy..
The Street Twin is not just a look. It’s also technology, and not the one that smacks of tools, friends gathered in a garage and engine parts lost between screwdrivers. The bike comes standard with a coded key, anti-dribble clutch, Ride-By-Wire throttle control, as well as disconnectable ABS and traction control. On the chassis side, there are more classic solutions. The tubular steel frame is an evolution of that of the Bonneville, associated with higher travel suspensions. The saddle offers more padding and less height. Comfort and pleasure should be the big winners of this job, while the driving position will remain as natural as possible. The spoked rims are not on call. Models with sticks will be more suitable for the fashion spirit. On the brakes side, one disc per wheel, that should be enough. Adrenaline junkies will find something to freak out at the Street Triple R.
There are also these small details capable of charming the nostalgic, the amateurs and the curious: the fork bellows, the mounting plates of the headlight, the exhaust flanges, the polished upper fins, the red potatoes, the trap door. remote fuel with a chrome cap … The 900 Street Twin will need to take care of its owners because opposite, it will compete with certain Harleys, the Yamaha XSR 700 and Ducati Scrambler; two choice competitors.
And since customization is a key part of the new Triumph Classics, Hinckley has planned almost 150 new parts and specific kits for this Street Twin. Here they are :
Scrambler : The Scrambler “inspiration” kit gives a clean and distinctive offroad style to the Street Twin.
Composed of a high quality Vance & Hines * brushed metal exhaust system, rear fender removal kit with small taillight, brown one-piece Cafe Racer-style ribbed saddle, turn signals LED and a brushed aluminum engine guard.
Brat Tracker : this kit offers a more aggressive urban custom style. It consists of brushed metal mufflers signed Vance & Hines, a rear fender removal kit with a small taillight, a black one-piece Cafe Racer-style ribbed saddle, compact LED turn signals, black grips and a brushed aluminum engine guard.
Urban : The Urban kit combines a casual sporty look that is at the same time more aggressive. It consists of an “Ace” style handlebar, Vance & Hines brushed metal mufflers, compact LED indicators, a tinted short fork crown and a leather and waxed cotton side bag..
Recall campaign:
In March 2019, Triumph launched a major recall campaign for its Bonneville and Street models manufactured between August 11, 2015 and January 13, 2019.
It is therefore the Bonneville T100, T120, Street Twin, Street Cup and Street Scrambler (or 68,686 motorcycles in the world) which were asked to go through the dealership for a problem of “clutch cable that could come into contact with the wiring of the main harness and damage it “, with a risk of malfunction of the lighting and indicators as well as loss of power.
