The name Tiger has been around for ages at Triumph, since 1993 designating the big trail par excellence; formerly in 955, then sportier in 1050 cc. Too bourgeois, too roadworthy to truly be an officer as a trail bike and to venture between pebbles, he delegates the torch of the all-road to his new little brothers 800. And all sparkling with the idea of going to play in the mud, it is this new Tiger 800 XC (Cross Country) which opens the doors of the forest to Triumph.
Physically, no complaints, especially since it really smacks of adventure. A trellis frame in light and resistant steel tubes (which frankly reminds that of the BMW 1200 GS), large spoked wheels, good ground clearance supported by suspensions of 220 mm at the front and 215 mm at the back, hand guards and an uncomfortable backpacker face, it’s Indiana Jones in concentrate English version. The little video below, where the XC is fitted with enduro tires, illustrates perfectly the adventurous side, limit “crossing the Amazon jungle”, of this machine..
Of course, we are not very far from the machines of yesteryear with a single cylinder, minimal weight and foolproof simplicity. Time has multiplied the capacities, the combustion chambers, the horses and the technique. Before, a 500 XT weighed nothing and allowed you to do anything but not too fast on the road because of its single piston and the technology of the day. Afterwards, the Africa Twin boasted remarkable versatility and capacity – but here we had already doubled the number of cylinders and increased the displacement by 50%. Now it’s Triumph’s turn to take it up a notch.
The 800 Tiger must stay true to the house architecture. It is therefore a 3 cylinder that is installed on board. A new displacement of 799 cm3 obtained thanks to a lot of modifications to the boiler of the Street Triple and Daytona 675. A little tour in the Hinckley surgery workshop: we push the walls, we press well all around, ggnnnnn… .. Suddenly, increased stroke and bore. All these efforts are not intended to increase the power of the 3 legs but to give it torque and much more availability at mid-speed. Out of the box, it’s more than 1 mkg more than on the Street, the maximum being obtained before 8000 rpm. The roadster spits out its maximum torque beyond 9,000 rpm, and for the sports car, it is worse: approaching 12,000.
This torque value is almost identical to that of the BM 800 GS. Funny, it’s its direct competitor, and in view of the technical solutions, the visual identity, the suspension travel, the size of the tires, the substantial saddle height and the playing field, they look like binoculars. separated at birth and each raised in a different country. The Teutonne delivers its maximum torque earlier with its parallel twin and announces a lower weight. Not impressed and ready to explain itself vigorously in the heart of a country outing, the Tiger 800 XC retorts with one more cylinder, 10 better horsepower (95 to 9,300 rpm) and a predictably more aggressive price.
Copiously motorized for a mid-capacity trail, the Tiger 800 will be able to line up beautiful stages without dragging and then adopt a muscular drive on paths where asphalt does not exist. Watch out anyway, teach you how to handle a 215 kg machine on soft ground. A life-saving ABS will be available and can be disconnected if necessary. Sure of its mill, the Triumph will face the stones with vigor thanks to its adequate chassis: 21 and 17 inch spoked wheels, new aluminum swingarm, inverted fork of good height, brake discs from 308 mm to l. ‘front and its brand new previously mentioned frame.
In every episode of Indiana Jones, the guy packs a chick. The Tiger 800 has this in mind and features an individual passenger saddle surrounded by massive grab handles. In addition to the tire pressure gauge, English can be equipped with a good set of options.
Let the imagination take over: the weather is bad, the state has not had a tune for years and all the roads are rutted, there is mud everywhere…. That’s when the Triumph Tiger 800 XC knocks on the door and says cheerfully: “It’s so cool outside !!! Are we going to ride? “
