What do the numbers and letters on a tire mean??

A tire shows a lot of information about itself on its sidewall, e.g. B. its size, its design, its maximum permissible speed, its load index and its age.

Size, carrying capacity and speed

So what does the string in the photo mean, for example, 160/60 ZR 17 M / C (69W), I agree?

The first number 160 denotes the tire width in millimeters; in the past, inches were also common. The number after the slash 60 indicates the ratio of height to width in percent: 60 percent of 160 mm means 96 mm height.

For tires with a radial carcass and a mandatory belt (so-called radial tires), a follows R., the one Z for approval above 240 km / h – both can be seen here.

For a tire with a diagonal carcass without a belt (“Bias tires”) would be a hyphen instead

Diagonal carcass tires with belt (“Diagonal belt tires”) at this point marks a B (like “belt”, english for belt).

The next number, here 17th,  is the rim diameter in inches.

M / C indicates that it is a motorcycle tire.

The following figure is the load index: the higher the number, the more load the tire can carry. the 69 stands for a maximum permissible load of 325 kg.

The last letter here W., indicates the permitted speed; the tire is therefore approved for 270 km / h.

Speed codes on tires

In detail, the letters that code the permissible speed mean:

  • J = 100 km / h
  • K = 110 km / h
  • L = 120 km / h
  • M = 130 km / h
  • N = 140 km / h
  • P = 150 km / h
  • Q = 160 km / h
  • R = 170 km / h
  • S = 180 km / h
  • T = 190 km / h
  • U = 200 km / h
  • H = 210 km / h
  • V = 240 km / h
  • W = 270 km / h
  • Y = 300 km / h

A tire must be suitable for the maximum speed entered in the vehicle documents + 10%.

A motorcycle that can reach 185 km / h according to the vehicle documents therefore needs tires with the speed index H or higher (185 x 1.1 = 203.5).

How old is the tire?

Tire lettering: production date.

The DOT number (DOT = Department of Transportation, the US Department of Transportation) encodes the manufacturing plant, the tire size and the tire type.

The production week is noted in the oval field behind it: 1516 means that the tire was manufactured in the 15th calendar week of 2016.

Direction of rotation of a tire

Tire marking: At least one arrow shows the direction of rotation.

At least one arrow on the tire shows its direction of rotation so that the tread can do its job (e.g. water drainage) in the best possible way.

Structure of a motorcycle tire

It says outside what can be found inside.

Even the inner workings of the tire are revealed on the outer wall: The tire in the picture has a layer of synthetic fiber (“Rayon”) and a layer of steel (“Steel”) under the tread, as well as a layer of synthetic fiber in the side wall.

The carcass plies (A), several on top of each other depending on the design, form the load-bearing structure of the tire.

The belt layers (B) are, as here in radial tires, as a cut belt, only under the tread and are intended to limit the dynamic growth caused by centrifugal forces.

The carcass plies, on the other hand, are wrapped around the bead (C) and, like the apex (D), reinforce the side wall.

The apex sits on the bead core (E) and fills the cavity above it. The bead core itself holds the tire on the rim; it is made of steel wire.

The vulcanized tread (F), too “Treads” called, finally carries the rubber compound available for wear with the profile.

Carcass plies of a diagonal tire.

Diagonal tires have several carcass plies that cross one another, which form a very stiff tire structure, but cause great dynamic tire growth at high speeds and also become very hot.

In the case of radial tires, on the other hand, sometimes only one carcass ply runs 90 degrees across the direction of travel. A belt wound in the direction of travel (“zero degrees”) lies above it. This construction is designed for very high speeds.
