Second hand advice on luxury touring motorcycles
Between 7,000 and 10,000 euros
Oscar Wilde had his own form of asceticism and lived according to the motto: I can do without everything? except for luxury. If you want to do the same and can spend between 7,000 and 10,000 euros, you will find the right used machines here.

As everywhere, there are motorcyclists like this and others. Some need 180 hp, a sports suspension and rasped knee sliders because they prefer to drive around in circles. They don’t need to read any further here. The others prefer to enjoy the country and its people on a two-wheeler with bag and baggage, man and mouse, protected by plastic and sprinkled with their favorite music. Viewed from the right angle, luxury tourers combine almost all the comforts of a convertible with those of conventional motorcycles, with the exception of winter suitability. Admittedly, when it rains it is a bit wetter and colder than in the SLK, but try to snake your way forward at the traffic lights or in a traffic jam. Anyone who has ever undertaken a multi-day voyage on such a ship is reluctant to do without the radio and wasteful storage space. May others be faster at the pass, at the latest after they have left the pass, they will stop and massage their buttocks and wrists. And the super tourist cruises past you relaxed and waving.

BMW K 1200 LT
Saw the ten years ago K 1200 LT the light of day and immediately took a top position in the list of the most powerful motorcycles. Not without reason: With a measured 125 Newton meters at only 4800 revolutions, a weight of 385 kilograms empty weight and its 600 permissible maximum as well as tons of plastic, a good part of which is due to the electrically adjustable panoramic window, generate respect. Which doesn’t get any smaller after climbing it. Buttons and switches everywhere you look. And even where you don’t look. Under the bench, for example, to heat it. Of course, that cost a surcharge, although the basic price of the equivalent of 17,000 euros was already quite steep. Full dressers came to just under 20,000 euros.
What makes the luxury tourer a luxury tourer? Is it the small flashlight in the compartment on the tank or the reading light in the cockpit that made it possible to navigate in the dark even in the pre-navigation era? Or the excellent wind protection, the huge mirrors, the perfect seating comfort, the electric reverse gear? The mighty suitcases with the huge top case, which are all operated with the same key? Or is it the surprisingly light-footed handling with a decent lean angle, the high-torque and sovereign four-cylinder? The K 1200 LT has it all to offer. The ABS is included as standard, and from model year 2004 there was even an electric main stand for easy jacking up. In view of such gimmicks and the sheer visual impact, some motorcyclists may ask whether a Smart is not the more sensible vehicle concept than the LT, but sufficient demand ensures stable used prices.
plus
Equipment: almost complete and luxurious
Handling: quite agile despite the high weight
Range: over 400 kilometers suitable for tours
Wind and weather protection: perfect
minus
Brake: requires a lot of hand strength
Transmission: occasionally causes trouble
Market situation
As in general with BMW, the used prices are also quite high with the LT. Well-kept specimens from the first year of construction, i.e. machines that are now ten years old, are traded from 7,000 euros upwards. For 10,000 there are years of construction around 2002. Although the LT is predestined for long tours, the average annual mileage is usually only insignificantly more than 5,000 kilometers. Wear and tear should therefore be less of a problem than damage to the floor. Two thirds of the used offers are made by dealers, almost all offers are checked. The biggest risk when buying is likely to be the first time the buzzers are jacked off.
Technical specifications (Model year 2001)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1171 cm³, 72 kW (98 PS) at 6800 rpm, weight 389 kg, payload 211 kg, tank capacity 23 liters, seat height 770 810 mm, top speed 201 km / h, consumption (country road) 5.7 l / 100 km, super.

BMW R 1150 RT
Like the letter combination LT in the four-cylinder engines, RT stands for the top model in the boxer series. Even if everything turns out a little smaller and more delicate with the boxer than with the row four, it still remains an imposing and visually very idiosyncratic appearance. Why the RT polarizes: You love it or find it ugly. As is well known, the form follows the function, and as far as the touring characteristics are concerned, this is beyond almost any doubt. Driving and seating comfort at the front and rear are impeccable, the driver’s seat is three-way adjustable in height. And the lens position can even be adjusted electrically.
The around 100 kilograms that the RT weighs less than the LT have a positive effect not only when maneuvering, but also when driving. With the Boxer, traveling quickly is even easier, even if the inharmonious and gruff brake booster takes a long time to get used to it. Viewed in isolation, the boxer engine is a great touring engine, it runs at least in the lower and middle speed range in a cultivated and high-torque manner, it only starts to tingle at the top. In direct comparison with the drives of an LT, Pan European or FJR, however, it becomes clear that the boxer with 95 hp and 100 Nm plays at the lower end of the power scale in this class. And the realization matures that with every newton meter more and every gear change less, the sovereignty increases, especially because the long-geared six-speed box of the R 1150 RT is not exactly considered a milestone in its craft. Regardless of this, the RT enjoys great popularity in tour circles. A fact that is also reflected in the high used prices. In general, the RT can count on fans that are as loyal as the Gold Wing or E-Glide, and the forum is very busy.
plus
Chassis: handy, stable and precise
Bench: height adjustable and suitable for long distances
Equipment: good, ABS and case as standard
minus
Battery: discharges when standing for a long time
Drive: strong load change reactions
Brake booster: takes getting used to
Market situation
The range of boxers is significantly larger than that of the four-cylinder and about half is provided by dealers and privately. Compared to the LT, for the same money you get a boxer two years younger, for 7000 to 10000 euros that is, the years 2001 to 2004. Real frequent drivers are also in the minority here, annual mileages of around 6000 kilometers are the rule. Most offers are lavishly equipped with accessories. Discontinued authority machines do not play a role in this price category and stand out due to their high mileage and special features (single seat, small suitcase, etc.).
Technical specifications (Year of construction 1997)
Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine, 1130 cm³, 70 kW (95 PS) at 7300 rpm, weight 281 kg, payload 214 kg, tank capacity 25 liters, seat height 805 845 mm, top speed 202 km / h, consumption (country road) 5.1 l / 100 km, super

Honda Pan European
archive
With the ST 1100 Pan European, which was offered from 1990 to 2001, Honda landed a direct hit with the touring faction and sank heavily in the market segment dominated by BMW. The perfect drive train, very comfortable accommodation for the crew and very good wind protection are among the most convincing arguments for the machine developed in Europe. The successor, the STX 1300, presented in 2002 should continue this story.
And the conditions were more than good. Honda promised more space, more weather protection, more steam in the basement, more comfort and even better handling. But the reputation of the 1300s quickly wavered. Because she tended to commute. Under certain circumstances (full load, topcase, windshield raised, new (!) Tires) not all, but many, lost their composure beyond 130 km / h and fluctuated more or less pronouncedly. In several product optimization campaigns, Honda tried to get the problem under control with modified engine mounts, screw connections and bolts for the swing arm mounting. However, not always with the desired success. The tendency to pendulum is the only thing that Pan can blame. In all other tour-relevant points such as range, equipment, handiness, luggage storage, etc., it is not only on par with the competition, but often above it. Above all, the engine is not only cultivated and powerful, but almost indestructible. Also very positive: the standard composite brake with ABS, which allows even inexperienced drivers short braking distances under adverse conditions. For tourists who travel a lot in speed-limited foreign countries or who are satisfied with the recommended speed, there is no reason not to buy pan. In any case, an extensive test drive is highly recommended.
plus
Drive: strong, supple and indestructible
Wind and weather protection: very good
Equipment: sensible and practical
ABS and compound brake: standard
minus
Pendulum tendency at high speed
Storage compartments in the cladding become very hot
Market situation
The second edition of Pan European suffers from its image as a Pendolino. Not all models are affected, and if so, not to the same extent. The majority of the offers come from merchants who trade in the pan. Apart from the pendulum problem, the Honda is a misunderstood genius. It is comfortable, agile and is considered extremely reliable and durable. The mileage is of secondary importance, it is more important that the optimization actions have been carried out. Interested parties should talk about the price after an extensive test drive. And strike.

Yamaha FJR 1300
Artist
Great tourers have with Yamaha A long tradition: XJ 900, FJ 1100/1200 and Diversion 900 form the ancestral line of the FJR 1300 presented in 2001. With 144 HP, a bridge frame made of cast aluminum and a chassis that is fully adjustable up to the rear pressure stage, the FJR gave and still gives the interested tourist a good shot of sportiness on the way. The equipment with suitcases was included in the design from the start, although the containers were only standard from model year 2004. The result: Similar to a BMW, the FJR looks almost better with plastic on the rear than without. ABS was only available for the 2003 facelift, but then as standard. Overall, Yamaha has changed little over the years. The electrically adjustable window was modified, the paneling got an additional storage compartment. The fervent wish of all FJR friends, the lowering of the high speed level through a sixth gear, the Japanese could not or did not want to fulfill until today.
The second point of criticism is the speedy driving style? and to which the agile FJR seduces ?? Footpegs that touch down early, especially in pillion rides. Otherwise, the crew is accommodated in a way that is compatible with long distances. A range of 400 kilometers is also appropriate to the species. Mechanically there is little to complain about with the Yamaha, it put up with an endurance test over 100,000 kilometers (MOTORRAD 23/2003) without complaint. Some of the units in customer hands suffered from defective valve guides, and Yamaha usually carried out repairs in an accommodating manner, even after the warranty period. In 2006 there was a recall campaign in which the throttle position sensor was replaced. A defective sensor made itself felt by the engine stalling after a long period of idling. In general, the FJR is by far the sportiest of the large, luxurious tourers.
plus
Motor as strong as an ox, reliable, long-lasting
Driving dynamics closer to the athlete than to the tourer
Equipment complete, but without frills like radio
minus
Speed level high due to missing sixth gear
Lean angle is very low, especially when driving with a pillion passenger
Market situation
The offers in the sought-after price range are usually from year of construction 2004, which means that ABS and case are standard equipment. Up to and including model year 2003, the containers cost around 700 euros extra, before 2003 there was no ABS. About two thirds of the FJR are at dealerships, but given the reliability, buying a well-kept specimen from private hands is not a great risk. The rare semi-automatic version AS (without clutch lever) is not yet available for less than 10,000 euros. See if the throttle sensor recall has been carried out.
Technical specifications (Model year 2003)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1298 cm³, 106 kW (144 PS) at 8000 / min, weight 283 kg, payload 193 kg, tank capacity 25 liters, seat height 800 mm, top speed 245 km / h, consumption (country road) 4.9 l / 100 km, normal

When are you ready for a luxury tourer? – silver backs
archive
The already practicing luxury tourist will not be at a loss for an answer: “Immediately after receiving the appropriate driver’s license”, he will present. But it is not that simple. Due to the heavy weight and dimensions, a certain two-wheeler routine can’t hurt. Otherwise, the following applies: Those who like to travel in pairs, frequently cover several hundred kilometers at a time, don’t want to limit their luggage to toothbrushes and credit cards and find accessory cases ugly, are on the right track.
Even those who prefer to sit upright rather than hunched over, dismount painlessly after hours in the saddle and also don’t want to seek shelter under the next bridge at the first rain drop, steer purposefully in the direction of upper-class tourers. If you also want a vehicle that does not put you under constant pressure, to drive faster than allowed and desired and also not only want to enjoy the wind but also your favorite music, you have no other choice. May the others blaspheme, you know better, put in a CD and enjoy.
Technology and depreciation – what you should consider when buying a luxury tourer
The same laws apply to upper-class motorcycles as to cars. The loss in value is between a quarter and a third in the first two years, then prices level off at a fairly constant level. Since Tourers are not modified every year, the year of manufacture only plays a subordinate role. The large-volume engines have a low specific power with a correspondingly long service life. It is important that everything works, including all accessories. Older bikes with built-in sound systems often still have cassette decks at work. Upgrading to the latest technology is usually time-consuming and expensive.
Motorcycles with very low mileage (which are more common than you think) are not necessarily the better choice, keyword damage. Especially in the Harley and Gold Wing scene, people like to add, modify and illuminate whatever the market or the alternator has to offer. Not everything is approved by the TuV. With specimens pimped in this way, an extensive study of the papers can save trouble later. In general, you shouldn’t be fooled by the first impression, because measured by their visual weight, the big ships sail quite easily. However, only when they are driving. During the first maneuvering attempts, a helper with strong arms within reach can help avoid embarrassing descents with high follow-up costs.
Alternatives
Kawasaki 1400 GTR. Data: 155 HP, 255 km / h top speed, 313 kilograms combat weight.
With Johannes Mario Simmel, it doesn’t always have to be caviar. And some motorcyclists are of the opinion that it doesn’t always have to be a BMW or full fairing to set off on a trip. The alternatives presented here represent individual philosophies, especially Harley and Honda Gold Wing have a very loyal following. The Kawasaki 1400 GTR is the most modern and most active device in this group, which is still fun even on the smallest of roads. In contrast to the Yamaha Royal Star, which cannot deny its cruiser origins. Strolling freely on well-developed streets, that is their world. Due to its rarity, it is a real used one for individualists.
