Vespa GTS 300 Super ABS / ASR in the driving report

Traction control scooter

We found out in Italian city traffic why the traction control is not superfluous on the 22 hp Vespa GTS 300 Super ABS / ASR.

A long-running hit – and the one presented in 2003 Vespa GTS is definitely one, a design icon at that – to have it in the range is both a curse and a blessing for the manufacturer. A blessing on the one hand because, especially with the expensive Vespa, a lot of money is poured into the Piaggio Group’s coffers. On the other hand, a curse, because it is a challenge and an obligation to adapt the classic to technical progress without changing or even giving away its character.

The main difference between the GTS 300 Super and the standard GTS is the black rims with polished horns, the red spring of the front shock absorber, the seat with white piping and the passenger grab handle instead of a luggage rack. Both in turn have clear glass indicators and a redesigned taillight with plastic chrome surround as well as a new cockpit in a classic look. All these goodies can also be attached to the predecessor without much effort, because the self-supporting body made of sheet steel remained unchanged.

Lean driving stability, refined running engine

The front single-sided swing arm with floating suspension strut, known from the Primavera (the one with the small body), is really new. This should benefit driving comfort. So far, however, there has never been any complaint and there was no reason to complain when the Vespa GTS 300 Super was ridden for the first time. More like driving stability, which has always been poor.

On the other hand, the cultivated, albeit somewhat tired-looking engine and the optional ABS (surcharge 300 euros), which is offered in combination with the traction control ASR, offer cause for joy. Its function could not really be checked at the first encounter due to the lack of roads with little grip. Neither does that of traction control. And if you are wondering about the raison d’être of such in a 22 HP vehicle, it should be said that the cobblestone streets in Italian metropolises – the natural habitat of every Vespa – is immense. And their slippery – not only when wet – definitely provides the ASR with work.

The Vespas provided at the presentation were all equipped with a contemporary gadget that makes every nerd sit up and take notice: VMP, Vespa Multimedia Platform, an app that currently only works on i-Phones, but which ideally provides deep insights into the inner workings of the Vespa GTS 300 offers. In addition to longitudinal and lateral acceleration as well as lean angles, the app also provides information about the currently requested power and torque as well as various consumption values. And if something slips, it shows the way to the nearest Piaggio dealer. In practice, however, the operation turned out to be not yet fully developed, especially when wearing gloves. On top of that, there are costs of around 160 euros for the holder and the Bluetooth module in addition to the i-Phone. The app itself is free.
