BMW keeps Tom Sykes in its official World Superbike team
End of the unbearable suspense that maintained BMW Motorrad about its second World Superbike rider next year: Tom Sykes logically remains on his factory S1000RR and Eugene Laverty therefore gives way to new recruit Michael van der Mark… Explanations.
Since the announcement in early July of the transfer of Michael van der Mark from the official Yamaha team (in 2020) to the BMW Motorrad team (in 2021), we knew Tom Sykes and Eugene Laverty were installed on "ejection saddles" … Finally, the Munich firm blew up the Irish !
The decision is logical, not to say obvious: with the English driver crowned in WSBK 2013 – and moved to 6.5 points from two other coronations in 2012 and 2014! -, the manufacturer relies on continuity and secures the services of an extremely swift pilot coupled with a proven tuner…

"Tom has been part of our WorldSBK team from the very beginning and he is a crucial pillar of this project. We are happy to be able to continue on this common path in 2021 that we started with the first tests in December 2018", explains Marc Bongers , director of BMW Motorrad Motorsport.
Sykes’s track record is also more substantial than that of Laverty: Tom, who is currently playing his eleventh Superbike season at the world level, climbed 112 podiums (in 305 starts), won 34 victories and signed 39 lap records in race.
In eight World Superbike seasons – interspersed with two frustrating years in MotoGP – "Yudjine" has climbed 35 podiums (in 182 heats) including 13 times on the top step and was the fastest rider in the race "only " five times. Another observation: the "elf" sometimes lacks luck and is injured…
Tom "Super" Sykes definitely crushes his future ex-teammate in terms of pure speed since he holds the absolute record for pole position in the category: the n ° 66 signed at the very start of the season at Phillip Island his 50th " Superpole "! No.50 has only three.
"We have already accomplished a lot together (two poles, four podiums and a lap record, editor’s note) and the objective now is to close the gap between us and the leaders. Tom’s considerable knowledge of the BMW S1000RR and his contribution will play a key role in achieving this objective, "assures his German boss. To be continued: stay connected !
