MNC analysis of World Superbike in Australia
Beyond the points distributed, each race weekend brings its share of remarkable feats and poor performances, good and bad surprises. In its analysis, Site reviews the highlights of the WSBK in Phillip Island.
Yamaha’s big comeback with Guintoli
New to the big leagues, the Yamaha R1 has also proven that it should be counted on from its first season. Unlike Sykes, Guintoli was riding his favorite track this weekend and he seems to have enjoyed every one of his outings..
At the top of the timesheets on Friday, the 2014 champion was delighted on Saturday evening to have finished "3.5 seconds from the win"and Sunday evening to have come close to a second, integrating at the same time the World Top 5 from his first race weekend !
Admittedly, the last few steps are always harder to climb, but we can count on our dear "Guinters" to continue to work hard (like Davies!) And to develop the R1 in the right direction. Put to the test last year by the Fireblade, his love for the Superbike is at its peak.
Guintoli’s performance on the new Yam ‘this weekend is all the more satisfying as his formidable team-mate Alex Lowes only collected two small points in the second round. A poor performance due, according to him, to the use of his mule of a second motorcycle assembled during the night…
In the first heat, it was a bad choice of front tire that would have caused his misfortune. "I have the feeling of being a teenager", tweeted the No. 22 Yamaha on Sunday evening,"I fell in love with Phillip Island, I love this place but it is not mutual".
Like Alex Lowes, Sylvain Barrier leaves Philip Island with two points on the clock, but his satisfaction is quite different since the two-time Superstock 1000 champion made his return to competition after a disastrous 2015 (read our).
Only one month after discovering his new mount – a ZX-10R prepared by the Pedercini team – "Syl’20" took 15th place on the grid and was able to defend it in both races. A gap of about twenty seconds separates him from the Top 10. Or 1 second per lap, less than a tenth per turn … Gaz Sylvain !
The driver who this weekend wrung his right grip the most is undoubtedly Michael van den Mark: the ardor of the young Dutchman (23 1/2 years old) has compensated tremendously well for the advanced age of his Fireblade, offering his team Ten Kate two superb podiums.
Managing to take advantage of the aspirations of the Rea and Davies locomotives, "Magic Michael" is even credited with the best top speed in the race: 315.8 km / h, a value equaled in the second round by ex-GP driver Karel Abraham on its powerful S1000RR…
The n ° 60 Honda leaves Australia with 36 points and settles in second place in the provisional. One is entitled to wonder if Jonathan Rea Himself would have done as well! And we can’t help but think of the feats VDM would achieve on the handlebars of a – more – competitive machine. Answer next year with the new Honda Superbike ?
