Statements by World Superbike riders at Magny-Cours
The eleventh round of the World SBK 2016 took place this weekend in Magny-Cours, France. To complete our near-live reports, here are the statements of the Superbike riders at the end of their two French races.
WSBK Round 2 Statements
Chaz Davies, 1st:
This day has not been easy at all. I grabbed the opportunity when it came up but honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. I struggled quite quickly, turning at the same pace as on Friday, in the 1’38 and a half. I also struggled to overtake the Kawasaki as I couldn’t see where to do it unless I took big risks. So I had to let the race come to me. That’s what happened in the end, when Jonathan and Tom both pulled apart at the exit of the hairpin, I just took the opportunity and attacked to put some distance between them. and me. It was one of the most important weekends of my career, because we won under very different conditions. We have reaped the fruits of hard work with the whole team ".
Jonathan Rea, 2nd:
I tried to plan my pass on Tom because he’s strong right now and it’s hard to overtake him anyway. My braking attack unfortunately allowed Chaz to pass in front of us. Then I had to try to pass Tom again, but the delay on Chaz was already too great. I may have spent too much time behind Tom, but at the same time he drives so well. I’m happy with my race because today second place was the best result I could get and I’m happy with my driving ".
(Jonathan Rea, continued)
“There are some areas that we need to improve the set-up of the bike, but all things considered I’m happy with the result. The gap is 48 points now and it’s nice to increase the lead in the championship, even if it isn’t. is that of a point at the Lausitzring last time and another point here! The championships can be played at one point, each of them is important. If we can just make a clean end of the season, then we can fill our mission".
Tom Sykes, 3rd:
The bike was going really well at the start of the race and I could quite easily line up lap times in 1 ’37. Unfortunately, for the very first time this weekend our pace has dropped and I’m confused about that. I had a hard time maintaining my speed on the angle … we’re going to have to study this. On Friday we were very fast and consistent, but today we had some problems in the second part of the race. However, we have been more consistent this weekend, and we are progressing step by step. But unfortunately we are already late in the season. At least are we able to fight ahead and very close to victory in the race ".
Leon Camier, 4th:
I’m really happy to be honest. I didn’t expect to be there at the end of the race. We made a few changes for the race, but I didn’t feel comfortable on the bike and couldn’t keep pace to stay with the Kawasaki. We did a good job nonetheless and I think it’s an accomplishment. We’re making progress as we go and I think Jerez won’t be that bad for us. On the other hand, Qatar will be more difficult. We will try to do our best in Jerez, then we will see for Qatar ".
Michael van den Mark, 5th:
The settings we tried in the warm-up didn’t really work, so we used the ones in FP2, the only long session I had this weekend. My start and first round were great. I had a constant pace, just a little slower than I expected. Once past Camier, I tried to move away but it was not possible. He walked past me and I just couldn’t stay with him. In the end, fifth place is not a bad result. We have scored some important new points and now have a solid fourth place in the championship in hand. Hopefully in two weeks in Jerez we will be able to fight for glory again ".
Lorenzo Savadori, 6th:
Even today we had a good race, we couldn’t do more. Since Friday we had some problems in terms of set-up, but this morning in warm-up we were able to take a small step forward, which allowed us to obtain this sixth place. We could have done a little better if we had been tuned a little better. Unfortunately, I felt a big drop in the tires after the first seven laps, and that slowed me down by almost a second per lap, then I stabilized by trying to contain the slip as much as possible. I would like to thank IodaRacing and Aprilia for this good work, for this very positive weekend for me ".
Sylvain Guintoli, 8th:
It was okay today actually, I feel like I got the best out of the YZF-R1, drove well and had a good pace. We knew after practice that we were lacking outright rhythm, and that was evident during the race. I’m obviously not happy with the position but in terms of driving I feel like I had a good race and I can’t wait to go to Jerez ".
Matthieu Lagrive, 15th:
I understood that it was going to be difficult when I struggled to stay with the group from the first lap: I’m not used to these fast paces anymore. I only gained confidence at the end of the race, but it was too late to catch up with the drivers who were ahead of me. I am nevertheless very happy. This weekend gave me strong emotions that I will not soon forget. Thanks to the Pedercini team for believing in me ".
