WSBK 1st Round Declarations

Find below the statements of the drivers who distinguished themselves on Saturday during the first round, and on page 2 the statements of those who led the second WSBK race on Sunday. Honor to the winner !

Jonathan Rea, 1st:
"I’m super happy to have won here and now that we’ve completed 25 laps on the bike in race condition we have some good information to try to improve even further tomorrow. I’m happy with the result, but honestly it wasn’t my best race because I made a lot of mistakes. I’m sure looking at it I might blame myself, but the most important thing is the 25 points of victory. It’s good for everything: the morale of the team and the championship. We still have one race tomorrow and it will be important to do a good job before the start of the eight week summer break.".

Tom Sykes, 2nd:
"I think we had tuned the bike pretty well overall, but we were just struggling with the last set of corners and over 25 laps it shows. I had to compensate in other areas and it was not ideal, especially because of the wind. I am relatively happy and there was nothing more I could do. Jonathan had a great race and we couldn’t get that little extra. Tomorrow we should find a small change to improve in a specific area. Overall I was happy with the performance at the start of the race and had some good lap times despite the wind. I think we have room for improvement. Second place is the best result we could get today. And it is not a disaster! We can build on this".

Nicky Hayden, 3rd:
"First of all I want to thank the fans and supporters for coming to Laguna this weekend! You could feel a great energy and the support I get is incredible! I got off to a good start and was fifth at the start, but my pace was not as good as expected. We had a few small issues: I was not able to brake properly, I felt very vulnerable in this area. I tried to be as fluid as possible despite the pressure from my rivals and to keep a constant pace. I was lucky enough to get the podium, but we’re going to take a look at the data tonight to find something for the second race. In the end, we have to be satisfied with our third place. We will try to do better tomorrow".

Michael van den Mark, 4th:
"My Superpole was not perfect, so I had to start from eleventh place. I got off to a good start, but on the first lap I missed a corner. I couldn’t get into the rhythm and I was overtaken. I made my way little by little, but no matter how hard I attacked, the gap with Savadori remained the same, which was a bit frustrating. I managed to turn a little faster and pass it, but Lowes was not that easy to pass. On the last lap I got up on Nicky but wasn’t close enough to stay ahead of him on the last corner. Fourth place is nevertheless an excellent result and I am back in fourth place in the standings. It was good that Nicky got on the podium today !"

Alex Lowes, 5th:
"I had a solid race this afternoon. There was obviously a bit of pressure after the disappointing 10th qualifying, so overall I’m happy to be fifth. With 10 or 15 laps to go I felt like we could fight for the podium, but unfortunately I had to struggle to pass, I couldn’t find the right place. I made a few attempts, but I didn’t have the pace in the areas where the overtaking had to be done. In the end, it frustrated me a lot, but it’s a good race and we’re pretty happy. I hope to gain confidence in places that will allow me to overtake a little more easily by making some changes on the bike.".

Lorenzo Savadori 6th:
"It was a pretty good race for me, I just missed a little something to get on the podium. For a first at Laguna Seca, finishing sixth not far from the podium is certainly positive. What is just a shame is that when other riders in my group slowed down I was faster but I couldn’t pass them because we are not at 100% yet. The point is, we don’t have a lot of time to work before the race, and Laguna Seca is particularly difficult. Despite everything, Aprilia and Iodaracing have done a good job and we will now try all together to improve for tomorrow’s race.".

Chaz Davies, fall:
"I am very disappointed … We had a good start and our pace was good from the start. I didn’t feel like I was at the limit, but I felt the rear lock up as I was on the brakes entering turn 6. When the rear regained grip, it overloaded the front and I couldn’t do anything. We will try to bounce back tomorrow, because we have good potential".

Davide Giugliano, fall:
"It was a difficult day for the whole team. We had the pace to get on the podium, if not more, but it’s useless to talk about it. We have to understand with the team what caused the crash, because at this point in the race I was not pushing 100%: I was trying to save the tires! We have to move on, tomorrow we will have another chance to do a good result".
